LB Gregg lives in the Connecticut hills with two lazy dogs, three above-average children, and a smoking-hot husband who, thank the good Lord, loves to cook. LB began writing in the spring of 2008 at the encouragement of author pal, Josh Lanyon. She never once looked back (although occasionally she looked down and tripped over her own feet). Catch Me If You Can is LB’s fourth published title.

I know that I should highlight how good the mystery plot of Catch Me If You Can was, I know I should tell you that Caesar Romano and Dan Green are a perfect detective couple and that they will become the next magnificent duo, but closing this novel what most remains with me is the fun I had reading it.

Caesar Romano is the son of a typical Italo-American family, typical since, doesn't matter if you are a saint or a sinner, if you are family you are loved; and Caesar, Ce for his friends, knows he is loved and that gives him an attitude to life more than positive. He knows he will succeed in his career, and today's target is to land the job as Assistant Direct to the most important art gallery owner of NYC, Mallory Albright. For that reason he has perfectly planned the exhibition opening at his current gallery, and since the subject are naked marble busts, what is better than having the waiters serving cocktails with the upper half of their uniform missing? Everything is perfect until the moment Ce's former boyfriend, and in the closet actor, Shep, crushes the party, Ce's current boss starts to behave in a strange way and a former police detective, Dan Green, develops a sudden interest in Ce and his whereabouts.

The morning after the party, one of the busts, that of Justin Timberlake, is missing the head, the clock that was at its wrist is found around Shep's private part, a paint from Albright's gallery is missing as well, and Ce and Dan have to resolve a mystery... the missing artworks? Well that too, but mostly they have to find a way to make their budding relationship works. True, they are on the right path, since Ce's family likes Dan, once they went over the fact he is/was a cop and apparently not all businesses of the Romano family is 100% legal, and you know that if you want to conquer and Italian lad, you have to pass through his family.

The novel is fast paced, so fast that you cannot really miss a word, otherwise you risk to not grasp the full concept of the sentence. Or maybe that was the result of Ce being a little incoherent, thoughts were swirling in his mind like confetti during carnival, and sometime I was still following one confetti from the sky to the ground, while Ce was already jumping on another wagon.

The house she shares with her dog, Wag, and cat, Lightfoot, is built upside-down except for the kitchen, bath, and stairs. Her past, which is somewhat mysterious, includes a pirate husband who supposedly buried treasure in the backyard. Unlike most parents, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle understands exactly what children like to do to entertain themselves. The funny names and exaggerated situations add to the fun. In addition to providing a childhood wonderland in her home, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle has a storehouse of "cures" for common childhood diseases including the Won't-Pick-Up-Toys cure, the Answer-Backer cure, the Never-Want-to-Go-to-Bedders cure, the Slow-Eater-Tiny-Bite-Taker cure, and several others. White perfectly captures the whiny voices of the children as well as the desperation of the parents. There is no one like Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle

There is no one like Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle. Her late husband was a pirate and her back yard is still full of treasure. Her house is upside-down except for the stairs, bathroom and kitchen, which author Betty MacDonald points out would not work very well if they were upside down like the rest of the house. The children in town love to visit Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, for she always lets them bake cookies, or play with her old clothes, dig for treasure or construct forts in the back yard. Kids love Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, but the parents in town love her even more. When their children come down with those dread childhood maladies like the "Answer-Back" disease, or selfishness, or picking fights, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle always knows the cure, which usually involves confronting the children with a double dose of just what they exhibit themselves.

This series of books from author Betty MacDonald, perhaps better known for THE EGG AND I and other adult comedies, remains a favorite among kids, parents and teachers (those who still have the time to read their class short-short stories, anyway). I should point out that the green cover currently pictured here actually belongs to another book in the series, and that original illustrator Hilary Knight (he of ELOISE fame) has been supplanted by a more modern illustrator (note that today's dads often have beards). The books are still charming, though, even at seventy years' remove, and these paperbacks are cheap enough to indulge in several.

Great stories, terrible art.

Based on story alone this book ought to get four or five stars. The one star review is for this particular new edition that replaces the wonderful Hilary Knight (illustrator of the Eloise books) artwork with fairly generic modern artwork. Do yourself a favor and track down an older version of this and the other two Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle books that Mr. Knight illustrated; they're cheap and much, much better.

A simpler time...

As a child, one of my favorite books to be read from and then to read myself were Betty MacDonald's "Mrs Piggle-Wiggle" series. Of course, I was living in the early 1950's and lived in a neighborhood where we all played outside, unsupervised, after school. The dads went off to work, and the moms stayed home with the kids. It really was a simpler time - but not a time I'd like to go back to. I have an almost three year old granddaughter and wanted to see if she might like the books - in a few years.The other day I downloaded the audio version of the first of the series, "Mrs Piggle Wiggle" and listened to it. I was just as delighted to hear it 60 years later.

It's always interesting to read or listen to a book that was written contemporaneously. This series, in particular, would be fobbed off as "politically incorrect" if published today, about today's world. It was a picture of a purer, more innocent time and that was how much of the country lived in the post-WW2 years. But, here's the thing: the times might have been more innocent but human nature doesn't change. Children still worry about the same things as we, their grandparents did, and still don't pick up their toys or bathe enough. They still go through stages where they talk back to the parents and teachers, and I don't think the "selfish gene" has been scrubbed from human reproduction. Betty MacDonald's parents and children - and Mrs Piggle Wiggle - are the parents and children of today. Addiction, violence and poverty have added to our problems but there was always a bit of that in the past. Hiding under our desks at school from the threat of nuclear war - like our wooden desks were really going to save us - and diseases that were rampant back then have been eradicated by cures. Betty MacDonald's wonderful stories full of interesting characters are as timely now as they were 60 years ago.

By the way, did you know that Betty MacDonald wrote the adult book, "The Egg and I"? That was one of four "adult" books she wrote, in addition to the children's books she wrote.

As a chronic sufferer of anxiety, phobias, depression, and general fear, this book has taught me that the fear of the Lord is the only thing I need to ever fear! When you truly know the Truth and stand on it, you begin to feel the chains of fear fall away.

About the Author
Susan K. Gardner is Associate Professor of Higher Education at the University of Maine, in Orono. She writes and presents widely on issues related to doctoral student success and development, and recently published The Development of Doctoral Students: Phases of Challenge and Support.

Pilar Mendoza is currently Assistant Professor in Higher Education at the University of Florida, having previously served as an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at Oklahoma State University. Her research focuses on the impact of academic capitalism on the public good of higher education.

Ann E. Austin is Professor of Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education at Michigan State University, where she twice has held the Mildred B. Erickson Distinguished Chair (from 2005-2008, and again in 2014 until taking a leave in 2015 to assume another role). She is now serving as a Program Director in the Division of Undergraduate Education at the National Science Foundation (on leave from MSU). Her research concerns faculty careers and professional development, teaching and learning in higher education, the academic workplace, organizational change, doctoral education, and reform in science, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. She is a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and the Past-President of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE), and she was a Fulbright Fellow in South Africa (1998). She is a founding co-leader of the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL), and was the Principal Investigator of an NSF-funded grant to study organizational change strategies that support the success of women scholars in STEM fields. Her work is widely published, including Educating Integrated Professionals: Theory and Practice on Preparation for the Professoriate (co-edited with C. Colbeck and K. O’Meara, 2008), Rethinking Faculty Work: Higher Education's Strategic Imperative (co-authored with J. Gappa and A. Trice, 2007), Creating the Future of Faculty Development (co-authored with M. D. Sorcinelli, P. L. Eddy, and A. L. Beach, 2006), and Developing New and Junior Faculty (co-edited with M. D. Sorcinelli, 1992), as well as other books, articles, chapters, and monographs concerning faculty issues and other higher education topics in the United States and in international contexts. She served as a member of the study team for the Asian Development Bank’s project and monograph series on Higher Education in Dynamic Asia.

Kevin Kruger An accomplished speaker, leader, and educator, Kevin Kruger joined NASPA as Associate Executive Director in 1994, and became its first executive-level President on March 15, 2012. In his capacity as a national advocate for students and the primary spokesperson for student affairs administrators and practitioners, he draws on more than 30 years of experience in higher education.

Prior to NASPA, Dr. Kruger worked for 15 years at the University of Maryland College Park and the University of Maryland Baltimore County. During his tenure at the University of Maryland he worked in orientation, student activities, leadership development, admissions, and with the vice president for student affairs office. Dr. Kruger has also served as an adjunct faculty member in the Student Development in Higher Education program at Trinity College in Washington, DC.

Dr. Kruger represents NASPA in national forums such as the Washington Higher Education Secretariat, which includes the leaders of approximately 50 higher education associations. While at NASPA, he has pursued a number of initiatives designed to enhance the association's role in public policy, research, professional development, and student learning and assessment, with a particular interest in the use of technology in serving diverse student populations.

Dr. Kruger has published and presented nationally on leadership development, using technology in student affairs administration, international education and is a regular lecturer on technology in student affairs, the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, assessment and student learning. He is the editor of two Jossey-Bass publications, Technology Innovations in Student Services and Using Technology to Promote Student Learning. He also has chapters in The Handbook of Student Affairs Administration.

It's about ME

As I read this book, I often found myself saying "Wow! This is what I am experiencing". I am working on my second graduate degree at a different institution so this is not a new community to me but the rules here are a bit different. It made me realize how fortunate I was in having great institutional support for my first degree. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is in a graduate program and keeps wondering why things operate in such peculiar ways. This book will also inspire you to take action to put in place some best practices.
