The ONLY Resource of its kind worth my Time

Blue Collar and Beyond, by Yana Parker, also the author of The Damn Good Resume Guide, has done another damn good job in creating a comprehensive source of trade jargon, terms and skills otherwise not found in resume publications. As the employment market grows increasingly competitive, many people are finding it difficult to land quality jobs without a resume. There are hundreds of resources available to people who generally wear a suit and tie to work - yet where can the construction worker, waitress, or auto mechanic turn to find support they need? This book addresses over 100 prime examples of quality resume writing for the sometimes "forgotten" salt-of-the-earth laborer. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who needs assistance in knowing exactly how to describe theiir accomplishments, skills and abilitities while still presenting them in a professional capacity. In addition to guidance on how to prepare a professional resume, this book positively addresses many resume hurdles such as "job-hopping", age discrimination, gaps in work history, and re-entering the job market after a prison term. None of these experiences, easy to deal with - but again, Yana has remembered and addressed the concerns with readable, useful and professional alternatives. All said and done, is it refreshing to know that there is at least once source of valuable information for the thousands of hard-working, very skilled "blue collar" workers. As a resume writer, who is constantly looking for valuable additions to my "library", I consider Blue Collar & Beyond an invaluable reference guide and source of impressive material.

Help with writing resumes

I am an employment specialist at a community college. I work in a special program that assists low income individuals with job search. The "Blue Collar and Beyond" resume book has been a valuable tool for me in helping clients create their resumes. The book is a collection of resumes in the following employment categories: Construction and Maintenance, Customer Service, Food Service, Office, Trades, Warehouse, and a few others). These cover 80% of the types of jobs that my clients are looking for. I give the book to my clients to provoke their thinking about the work they have previously done. This gives them ideas for their own resumes. I have found that most resume books focus on professional level jobs. The resumes in this book are simple and straightforward. My clients almost always find a few things that are helpful to them when they read the resumes related to the type of work they are looking for. This is a unique product that fills a special need, and I can recommend it highly.

Finally! A Book for People Who Work for a Living

Finally, a resume book for jobs that do not require a college education. The book has 171 resumes for jobs such as master cake decorator, clerical office worker, plumber, cruise line customer service. It has a helpful section telling how to get around difficult problems such as job gaps, lack of experience, a spotty education record, and age discrimination. It is readable and encouraging.

Undaunted History

Great way to read about history. Not a big history buff and Howard makes it easy to follow this complicated subject and treats the players with respect and sensitivity. The older, used copy made it even better! They should make a movie about this story, and Johnny Depp can play Louis!

The amazing story of the Metis people whose French ancestors first colonized and controlled most of North America. Louis Riel should have been a National Hero for all Canadians since without him most of the land west of Ontario would have fallen in US hands.

This book is riveting and should be required reading for history majors.

Strange Empire

In large measure, this book is the history of Louis Riel, a Metis leader, and his efforts to gain recognition and independence for the Metis people. Since the ethnic group usually called Metis was closely tied to Riel, the book is also a partial history of that group.

Metis is a French word that can be translated as "mixed blood." In a narrow sense, one might think of the Metis as the offspring from intermarriage between the French and Indians (mostly Cree) of eastern Canada during the early days of the fur trade. In a practical sense, the group must be broadened to include at least Chippewa, English, and Scot parentage. In the context of the twentieth century, an even broader definition is used. However, some combination of white and Indian linage is usually a prerequisite.

This book is a classic by a legendary author of Montana history. Joseph Kinsey Howard (1906-1951) is also known for another classic, "Montana: High, Wide, and Handsome," a book considered for decades as the definitive history of Montana. Howard spent much of his short life in an area of Montana that has a significant Metis population. He understood the Metis, respected them, and spent years preparing to write "Strange Empire."

The original publication was in 1952. More recent issues include an introduction by Nicholas C. P. Vrooman, Director of the Institute for Metis Studies at the College of Great Falls, Montana. This introduction is a magnificent addition.

The Metis were primarily a product of the fur trade. Their language was a hybrid of French and Indian; definitely not English. Most of the Metis communities remained in close contact with the local Indian tribes. Many of these mixed blood people were drawn to the Red River which flows north from the present states of Minnesota and North Dakota into Canada and on to Hudson Bay.

Louis Riel had trained for priesthood, but hadn't become a priest. Despite occasional self-doubt, Riel had many characteristics of leadership. He was literate and a good speaker and, more importantly, was fluent in English. The Metis attempted to establish their own nation in the Red River Valley. Howard beautifully summarizes the Metis situation: "This conflict between the Metis and the Canadian government was not only a battle over native and Euro-American claims, but also an age-old fight between Catholicism and Protestantism, English and French, English and Irish, and English and American causes." Louis Riel and the Red River Metis faced the Canadian forces with little loss of life on either side. Some people feel that the decision of whether the United States or Canada would rule what is now central and western Canada hung in the balance. The Metis won many of their goals but came under Canadian rule. One result is that the Red River part of Canada became the province of Manitoba in 1870. However, for his part in the "rebellion," Canada exiled Riel for five years and he went to the United States.

The Metis were buffalo hunters but were significantly different from Indians. They dressed differently. Many combined their hunting with agriculture. They had their own language. They had their own culture, a melding of the cultures from which they came. They were much more efficient at commercial buffalo hunting than were the Indians. Their background in the fur trade meant that they had the weapons, hunting experience, and trading expertise needed. Synonymous with the Metis is the Red River cart. Pulled by draft animals, it had high wheels and could carry several hundred pounds. With these carts, the Metis could transport the hides, pemmican, and dried meat of many buffalo to market locations. Twice yearly, the Metis gathered in a large force to go to the buffalo herds.

As the buffalo herds dwindled, the Metis went further west for their hunts. As a result, Metis communities developed in the Turtle Mountain area of North Dakota, the Milk River country of Montana, and Saskatchewan in Canada. Later, communities developed near Lewistown and Great Falls, Montana, (note that most of these locations were undeveloped, and probably unnamed, when the Metis first arrived). Louis Riel moved westward also and became a teacher at a mission in the area of Great Falls.

In Saskatchewan, the Metis were experiencing problems dealing with the Canadian government; problems very similar to what they had experienced in the Red River country. In 1884, the Canadian Metis appealed to Riel to serve as their leader and negotiator. Riel answered the call. Ultimately, an armed conflict evolved with the Canadian military and Mounties facing the Metis and their Indian allies. This time the Metis were crushed. Louis Riel was tried and hung.

There is disagreement concerning Riel's role in Saskatchewan. Some people feel he became insane, some dispute that opinion. He felt that God guided him and when a disagreement arose with the Catholic priests, he attempted to separate the Metis from the Catholic Church. The Metis uprising in Saskatchewan was probably doomed from the beginning, but Riel made things worse by his indecision between peaceful negotiations and the use of force.

In 1982, an amendment to the Canadian constitution gave the Metis aboriginal rights. In the United States, the Metis do not have a legal relationship with the government and do not have a reservation or enjoy other rights granted to Native Americans. In each recent session of the U.S. Congress, there have been bills concerning what is often termed Montana's Landless Indians. Many of this group are Metis.

This book reads almost like a novel. It is well researched. Every book published since "Strange Empire" and containing a mention of the Metis, references Howard's book. A comprehensive and modern history of the Metis is needed but at the moment, this reviewer is unaware of anything near as useful as "Strange Empire."

I just wanted to add several comments. Overall I am very familiar with the first edition of this book, because I had to use it as a major source of guidelines at my previous job. The book was a great source! I had some background in structured finance and investments analytics, but I had zero experience in equity valuation before. In some 40-60 hours I was able to learn a lot about firm valuation (especially useful material - dividend discount model, market comparables, and free cash flow models) so that I could start preparing my first equity valuation reports. The second edition is an extended version, which still has all the advantages of the first edition: straightforward approach to valuation, a lot of examples, as little cumbersome math as possible. It is definitely a must read for any private investor and novice financial analyst. By the way, some sections of this book (industry analysis) are still included in the CFA curriculum (level 2, Equity valuation).

Comments from a Recognized Master of Value Investing

As a long time practitioner of value investing, it is inspiring to see recent business school graduates and new investment analysts praise the first or second editions of the book and tell how valauble it was for them in understanding this complex area. This book is certainly a better resource that anything we had years ago at Harvard Business School.

Perhaps I am a good reviewing source from the investment community, as over the past five-year period 2005 to 2009, I ranked as the number #1 performing separate account value manager in the country, and this ranking includes all market cap categories (per the Morningstar rankings).

So-so book

As a general valuation text, this book is, at best, of average quality. I would go with Damodaran's Investment Valuation or Koeller, et al.'s Valuation texts instead.

Part One of this book on the Investing Environment is too long and had too much extraneous information.

Part Two is pretty good. This is where I think most of the value in this book resides. The author gives you a good guide on how to perform an industry and company analysis, including things that have to be considered in order to determine the value of a company.

Part Three is a discussion of various valuation methods, and this is where other books do a better job. For example, Damodaran or Koeller have a much better discussion of valuation methods. The one thing lacking here is that being a post-crisis valuation book, there is no discussion of issues with valuation during the crisis period. For example, blindly applying the CAPM when the risk-free rate was declining faster than increases in the risk premiums during certain periods during the crisis led to wacky results.

Part Four is on "Special Cases," which was the most promising of all the topics but it turned out to be the biggest disappointment. I was (apparently) mistaken to think that this was going to be a more detailed discussion and implementation of the various special cases you can see from the TOC (PE, financial firms, insurance companies, etc.). However, this turns out to be just a high-level discussion of things most experienced valuation professionals know already (i.e., there are complications in valuing these other types of companies). The chapters in this section do not go into detail as to how to work around some of these complications. For example, the author discusses how to read what is purported to be an excerpt of the loss reserve table from the financial statements (this is also an incomplete, overly simplified depiction of the tables which are much more complicated in reality). However, the author doesn't go the next step to explain clearly as to how this information can be used in the valuation exercise.

Part Five is also pretty weak. For example, the author spends time giving his opinion on the "causes" of 2008 crash, which I think would have been better spend discussing valuation issues during the crisis.

It was written by US Army historians paid by taxpayers, published at taxpayer expense, and is available for FREE download at the Combat Studies Institute Press. A Very, Very Good Intro to The Plagues and the Rise of Epidemiology

For reasons ununderstood to even myself, I love factual books about epidemiology, especially the plague and influenza. I've read a lot of books on the subjects. This was a particularly good one.

Very confused book

If you are looking for a book on a topic like"The Black Death" or some such turn elsewhere. This book conflates at least three major historical incidence of plague and it can be difficult and confusing to know which one the author is writing about. I don't agree with the author that basically plague is plague, whether it's from the 4th or 5th century BCE or an outbreak in the 6th century CE or 19th century CE China. The book also tries to convey that our ancestors must have greatly inflated death counts and social disruption, all the while using so-called experts to basically say they're guessing just as much as the older, more "imaginative" generations. And wasting time pretending to be a literary critic for low and high brow artworks is space that could have been used to better craft the storyline he's trying to promote.

Three stars for some interesting information on new historical and medical perspectives.

How to be a billionaire like Warren Buffett? No, but a good way to know the man behind the curtain.

If you want some technical tips on how to be the next Warren Buffet, go grab a copy of Ben Graham's Security Analysis from 1934. But if you want a look at the man Warren Buffett, you have come to the right place. Want to know what kind of family man Buffet is? Want to know how a billionaire treats his children? Or how a young millionaire budgets money to his homemaker wife? Fascinating stuff.

You can also learn about his early career and how he got started, as well as his father the politician and the impact that had.

To many of us Warren Buffet is a billionaire investor who knows the ins and outs of Wall Street way better than most of us. Being a financial celebrity, you would expect to find his whole life online. That though isn’t the case with Warren. Little was known about his personal life until Alice Schroeder wrote this book- The Snowball: Warren Buffet and the Business of Life. Reading through the book you will realize that you don’t have to be successful after everyone else has failed. Warren, commonly known as the “Oracle of Omaha” is a financial investor who also doubles up as a mentor. For only $13.84, you will get to meet Warren in this 832 pages book. He will endow you with timeless financial wisdom and proper business ethics that aren’t taught in school.

His practical approach to life will motivate you to kick start your own. The pity party story that one may tend to propagate as reason as to why they aren’t succeeding will diffuse after reading this book. Warren worked to be where he is currently and was never born with a silver spoon. He is a practical inspiration. As you read along, you will learn that no man is an island and that having a strong support system will go a long way in ensuring you succeed. For example, his associate Charles Munger has been his associate since 1959. It doesn’t have to be the perfect system but rather a unit you can count on.

The book is full of insights and it is by reading it that one will be able to grasp and even apply some of the insights in his/her life. Unlike some autobiographies that are boring to tears, this one is different. There are hilarious snippets after every other chapter and with no time you will complete reading the autobiography and even probably re-read it. It will feel just like the first time you opened the book to read. Alice has also included notes to help you understand the book better.

The title of the book is a metaphor that depicts the ever growing wealth of Warren. The book is lengthy and has a lot of details some of which one may not find necessary but the conversational writing that Alice has employed in penning this book will keep you glued to the book. This is a must read book that walks you through the life of a legend.

Although i did not understand the business deals and the financial ideas like a business pro would. but this book kept me turning pages because how it is written, personal matters of warren intertwined with business let you go inside the head of a giant man and learn something about success.
I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for inspiration.

Very entertaining and great writing. The author Alice must have spent significant numbers of hours researching and interviewing the Buffet family and Buffet himself. The book is authentic, humorous, touching and establishes a very vivid Warren Buffett in front of us. It depicts Warren just a human like us who had his peaks and valleys, happiness and sorrows, accomplishments and challenges. It demystifies his success as a story of hard working, intellectual curiosity, calculated risk taking and lifelong pursuit of his passions.
