Each sense gets its own brief chapter, kicked off with a few well-worn observations or factoids to help readers understand both how the senses work and how they fit into a grander scheme. A spread or two of mildly playful rhymed musings follow ("Worms are soft,/ beetles are hard./ Can you find some/ in your yard?"). But it's Haley's (It's a Baby's World) free-wheeling watercolor-and-ink cartooning and frisky handwritten typography that add jolts of humor and energy. For a full-bleed violet-hued painting showing a boy going to bed ("Do you see shadows on the floor?"), the artist's slightly off-kilter perspective, plus an unperturbed canine companion on the floor, offer readers comic relief and reassurance alongside the elongated shadows. Adults reading with a child will appreciate the chapter conclusions, which offer a list of questions that may well spark discussion: "Do you ever get angry and pretend you can't hear people?" or "When you shut your eyes, what happens to your eyeballs?" Given how much series like The Magic School Bus have upped the ante in the science category, older children may not find much meat here. Preschoolers, however, may develop a new awareness thanks to this book's gentle promptings and Haley's inviting illustrations. Ages 4-7.

Grade 1-3-This clear, humorous look at the five senses will engage young children. Each short chapter focuses on one of the senses, opening with a simple explanation that uses everyday experiences. In the first chapter, the sense of smell is described with a suggestion that readers hold their noses, let go, and discover what they smell. Cartoonlike drawings show a pizza, some blue cheese, and a boy holding his nose. Tidbits of interesting factual information follow, such as "Deer have a very good sense of smell. They can sniff the wind to smell if dangerous animals are near." In each chapter, the pace and tone of the book then change as a fictional rhyming text exuberantly brings a sense to life, for example, "Wind and waves,/Shells and sand,/The salt air smells/Oh, so grand." Finally, each chapter ends with a series of simple questions designed to encourage children to think about how they use their senses every day. Nicely done.

Generously illustrated in cartoon-style art, the chapters begin with a page of factual information presented in bullet format, followed by a couple of pages of short rhymes, and a page of questions that provide topics for discussion or follow-up activities. Ziefert keeps her young audience in mind as she explains the science, and the rhymes are short, cute, and often fun. Kids will especially like the silly poems: "When you're tired and think you're sweet, / Pull off your socks and smell your feet." Have Joanna Cole's The Magic School Bus Explores the Senses (1999) on hand for children who can handle a more in-depth discussion but don't want to give up the humor. Lauren Peterson

Perfect science for pre-school and kindergarten

This book uses a great approach to introduce preschool and kindergarten aged children to the science of perception (your senses). Each sense gets a chapter with an introduction (about 1 page explaining what it is, and a little bit of science that explains how it works), a poem for fun (2-3 pages), and a page of questions to think about (have you ever experienced or thought about...). Great as a whole book, and great as part of a unit on a single sense. My almost 5-year old daughter really has enjoyed this book (and we have read several chapters multiple times), and when I brought it to her preschool class, it really kept their attention, and generated a lot of questions, thoughts, and ideas.

You Need to Read This Book!

I was curious if this book was worth my precious time and mental effort, particularly because I am not in the world of business, keynote speaking, or of giving presentations or sales pitches. The answer is a resounding, "YES"! In fact I wish that I'd had this book six months ago! I work in the field of education and my mental processes are firmly fixed in the world of practical application. This book has transformed my thinking with regard to communication in all its facets as I approach my job, whether that be giving lessons, interactions with students or parents, or even pitching new ideas or programs to my staff. This book is so infused with practical, useful tips, that it has already impacted my professional and personal life.

Tim Pollard has created a work that is smooth in flow, transitions, and cadence; while simultaneously providing rich insights into the structure and design of communication and presentations. His consistent theme of "Powerfully land a small number of big ideas" invoked a paradigm shift in my thinking. The insights he provides in presentation design are then fleshed out in entertaining and powerful illustrations that land perfectly while creating strong connections within the mind of the reader.

This is a book that I will easily read multiple times and will be reused and revisited with frequency as I prepare future lessons, meetings with parents, and even when I pitch ideas to my spouse (shhh don't tell). Word of warning: you won't be able to sit through mind-numbing powerpoint presentations that you've always known were a waste of time, but that you can now intellectually eviscerate based on poor presentation design. In other words you will have even less patience with poor presenters- as this book will make YOU "The Compelling Communicator".

Simply outstanding. I've known Tim as a friend, colleague, and mentor for almost 20 years, and there is no one more skilled at the art and science of presentation design. And perhaps more significantly, there is no one more skilled at the art and science of TEACHING presentation design.

Since starting Oratium, Tim has developed a systematic approach to the design and delivery of presentations that is applicable to everything from sales pitches to keynotes to Ted talks to emails to sermons, etc. The framework outlined in The Compelling Communicator is supported by leading research in how the brain processes information and how human beings learn; and it's buttressed by Tim's years of in-person experience communicating with, and coaching, leaders in business and non-profits worldwide.

The framework will take some time to learn and to apply, but if you make the effort you will find that you actually spend less time crafting your messages, while simultaneously having much greater impact. If you are in a role where communication is at all important (which is, let's face it, pretty much everyone), this book needs to be on your "must read" list.

Powerfully Land a Small Number of Big ideas

Here's the bottom line: I read this book, and then ordered 10 more copies to give to my best friends. It's that powerful, and for anyone in business making any kind of presentation, it's simply essential reading. If you read one business book this year, read this one.

This book provides the most clear and compelling path toward presentation excellence I have ever read. It effectively diagnoses why most presentations underwhelm and how presenters can avoid those pitfalls.

Pollard breaks his book into two key themes: "Understanding the Skill We Need to Master" and "Mastering Presentation Design." Pollard really nails why most presentations -- especially sales -- fail to impact audiences like presenters hope. PowerPoint silliness, long-windedness, needless repetition, poor (or no) organization or flow -- I've witnessed and cringed during all the major presentation sins. Probably you have too. Here Pollard gets to the key idea of the entire book -- a presentation succeeds when a presenter properly and forcefully land a small number of critical big ideas.

Powerfully landing a small number of key ideas (or insights or teaching points) has a number of positive benefits. First, it sends a clear signal that you respect the audience and their time. Second, the presenter must keep the audience -- and its needs and challenges and problems -- at the fore. (Again, which enormously respects the men and women whose precious time and energy you are taking up for your presentation.) Third, to deliver these small number of key insights, the presenter must carefully consider what the critical teaching points are, their logical interactions, and their impact on the audience. The presenter must distill the presentation to its essence -- a far more rigorous intellectual exercise than most presenters attempt in today's business world. Fourth, the presentation can serve as the catalyst for (potentially) enormous action. The benefits of this approach -- and the resulting presentation -- can literally change the fate of people and companies.

In the rest of section one, "Understanding the Skill We Need to Master," Pollard dives into some of the science around why a few number of powerful ideas stick with audiences more effectively than, say, "show up and throw up." Done well, such a presentation sticks with humans better because of the way our brain processes, stores, and recalls ideas. And then Pollard outlines what an effective presentation looks like.

In section two, "Mastering Presentation Design," he digs into the nuts of bolts of creating a tremendous presentation. He begins with a powerful tool, called the Initial Presentation Profile." I'd never seen such a tool. It's incredibly simple, and using it would have saved me headache and heartache numerous times in my career. Pollard proceeds by examining how a presenter can select the "Right Content," put it in the "Right Sequence," and secure the "Right Engagement" with the audience. Simple, logical framework - and completely overlooked by the vast majority of presenters.

Throughout the book, Pollard offers a ton of useful approaches and ideas that fit into his framework and augment presentations enormously: 100 Pennies; audience seniority; driving at audience action; rational and emotional engagement; weak and strong words; practice and rehearsal; handouts vs visuals; and the Pyramid of Planned Outcome. And these topics are not diversions. They fully and directly reinforce Pollard's critical lesson: powerfully land a small number of big ideas.

Again, I rarely read a book then go buy 10 more copies for friends. But that action indicates how strongly this book resonated with me and radically altered my own approach to my own presentations (in the residential real estate industry). Pollard has written a masterpiece.

Pat Dugard worked until 1999 at the University of Abertay Dundee teaching statistics and providing statistical support and consultancy for researchers in psychology, engineering and other areas. Since then she has worked on two books with John Todman, with Open University and WEA students, and done statistical work for community groups and for engineers at Abertay.

John Todman lectured in the Psychology Department at the University of Dundee, first as a Lecturer, then as Senior Lecturer, then as a Professor. During that period he taught in addition to aspects of cognitive psychology, Design and Analysis at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His research has been primarily in the areas of computer-aided communication for people without speech, and in computer anxiety. Sadly, John died just as this edition of the book had been completed.

Harry Staines has lectured statistics to a wide variety of students (including psychologists and nurses), led research groups and supervised postgraduate research students at the University of Abertay Dundee for over 20 years. He left his job as Professor of Applied Statistics in 2007 to work in the pharmaceutical industry designing and analyzing clinical trials. He also provides statistical support to medical researchers and QCMD.

I got this book for a mid level graduate statistics class where most work was completed on SPSS. This book was really helpful when the instructor tailored the assignment to the book. That said, the book is so structured that it is difficult to find background information or solutions to problems not directly covered by the chapter.It is not especially easy to read if you are not familiar with statistics. So if you are required to get it for the class it's worth the money but I wouldn't get if you're just looking for a study aide for multivariate analysis. I'm sure there are better aides out there.

I purchased this book for my class. It was much cheaper than at the school bookstore and came nicely packaged and on time. I recommend this book to anyone who needs to learn data analysis. I used it for my Master's Thesis in psychology.

Ok, 10-page book, two characters mentioned

First the positive ... This is a cute book with bright colors. This large board book has pages that are sturdy and easy to turn for little hands. My 2.5 year old son watches the cartoon and loves to point to the characters in the book as they appear on tv.

Its size is about 8" x 9" and contains 10 cardboard pages (5 front and back, including cover). In the middle of the book is a cloth tube that resembles the dragon's body. When the pages are turned the 3-D body appears on each page. There is nothing unusual about the body. I've seen some pop-up books where it looks like the feature moves. This just looks like cloth around wire tubing. Although my son enjoys the book, for a book that cost over $10 and only has 10 pages, I do not think it is worth the price.

In addition, six characters are drawn into the book and only two characters are mentioned - Kai Lan, the little girl, and Tolee, the koala bear. That's fine, but if you don't particularly watch the show and your child asks you the names are of the other characters - tiger (Rintoo), monkey (Hoho), rhino (Lulu) grandfather (Yeahya sp?) - you won't know how to answer. I think books should try to weave the names its major characters into the story, after all, the intro to the cartoon always mentions the characters names too.

SOOOOO cute. mt 2 year old loves this show so i thought books would be great for her. Its a boardbook so she cant rip it apart and its kindof a pop up book. that was a nice surprise. i opened it and the body of the dragon poped open (basically a coil covered in red fabric that looks like the lengthy part of a traditional chineese dragon) i love it she loves it and i would definately recomend it, especially for the price. its perfect!
