About the Author
Jon R. Ramsey was an Associate Professor of English and the Dean of Studies at Skidmore College, from which he retired in 2004. His career in administration and teaching continued, however, through June 2014 at the University of California, Santa Barbara. At UCSB he was the Director of Policy and Publications for the Graduate Division and for eight years was a Continuing Lecturer in the UCSB Writing Program. He has published a number of articles and book chapters and has co-edited two books on literature, writing, and administrative issues. As an administrator and office director, he has been especially involved in creating and implementing new programs in the United States and abroad and in constructing a wide variety of policies, tasks which frequently required complex written negotiations with myriad internal and external audiences. He earned his B.A. at San Diego State University and a Ph.D. at the University of California, Riverside.

An Excellent Text for Advanced Business Writing Classes

A huge challenge for the college business writing instructor is coming up with realistic, engaging assignments beyond the memo report and the bad-news message. “Business Writing Scenarios” meets that challenge beautifully.
The text, which I received from the publisher as a review copy, includes a wide range of case-study assignments. These cases require students to write pieces they may have to write on the job: explanations, denials, inquiries, solicitations, complaint responses, and announcements of negative news. Beyond those, the text includes excellent team writing assignments including a policy, business plan, recommendation, request for proposals, and grant proposal.
A significant strength of “Business Writing Scenarios” is the supporting discussion about each writing task. Each assignment includes detailed hints to help students be successful. Those hints include ideas about the purpose, audience, communication strategy, and content of the message. They provide just the right level of support to lead to success for both students and teachers. Professor Ramsey’s expertise as a writing teacher is obvious from the thoroughness of the information.
An important resource for teachers and students is the text’s many examples of writing, by public figures, students in business writing classes, and the author. By my count, “Business Writing Scenarios” contains about 90 examples. Students can learn much even from the bad examples, whose faults—such as their extreme brevity, poor layout, and thoughtlessness—the author analyzes. I can think of past teaching situations in which one of Professor Ramsey’s examples would have perfectly illustrated an essential lesson.
The book contains elements not often seen in business writing texts: an excellent discussion of office politics and the challenges of writing within the organization, a comprehensive chapter on the job-search process and its required documents, detailed examples and discussion of document design, and a wonderful chapter, “Business Writing Gaffes in the Real World.” This gaffe chapter includes authentic examples of foolish writing that ruined relationships and careers—messages with exaggerations, lies, insults, embarrassing disclosures, awkward timing, and more. While entertaining, the examples offer students a real opportunity to understand the ramifications of bad business communication.
Because its assignments are demanding and sophisticated, “Business Writing Scenarios” is an excellent text for an advanced writing class, even an MBA program. I recommend it as a rich resource for college instructors and their students.
