Get ready for a ride with the most unlikely of tour guides. He's a flea, (quite literally), with a seemingly tireless desire to live out the voyeur's dream. Beginning with a young woman and travelling into the depths of titillating depravity, this narrative will amuse and arouse even the most detached of readers. It's often supposed that our Victorian predecessors had a simplistic and becalmed view of what sex should be and that they spent their most intimate moments teeter-tottering between self-conscious embarrassment and a few seconds of climactic pleasure--not so! This interesting book explores the fact that intelligent people everywhere, and from every time, share some common attributes in the sexual arena: they explore their own fantasies to extremes and in very complex detail. Another link to our collective past? Well, maybe that would be telling it a little too dramatically. The book is marred by a rather one-note plot line and it becomes faintly out of touch when exploring some of the more harmless "taboos", but after all, it is erotica. And a flea's personal views, might, after all, need to be a bit focused, even if he tries for the profound. He's still just a self-proclaimed little love bug.

This book is such a beautiful and saucy read. Brilliantly written with wonderful descriptions. A fast read that you won't want to put down. A book you can read over and over. Definitely a feast for the sensual mind.

A Flea Sees All

I had read about this book long ago. One of the underground series of erotic literature in the 1800's, it clearly is the product of a fertile and imaginative mind. The sexual instincts of man have been around and kicking ever since we came into this world, and the more we push it under ground, the more it surfaces in bizarre ways.

However, having said that, there is a sense of amusement in the way that the book has been written, and I read it for the subtle tongue in cheek humour as much as for the erotic aspect of the book. It is a fun book, which allows sufficient room for the readers imagination to play. This, I suppose, is what erotic literature should do

The Power of Suggestion

Pleasant and engaging reminiscence on Hegarty's long and successful career as a creative director in advertising. Interest anecdotes regarding clients and campaigns such as the VW Beetle and Levi's button fly 501 jeans. I remember buying a pair because they were black and therefore cool, being annoyed a the buttons, but no memory of the campaign which can be found on youtube. His assessment of the Catholic Church as the world's #1 brand whose goal is to sell belief was both amusing and provocative as was his approach that customers should be regarded not as consumers of a product but as an audience to be engaged into a relationship with the brand. An interesting discussion as to why Americans like things to be “big”, but why that idea fails to appeal to Europeans.

The book contains quotable quips on media neutrality, and the futility of “tissue meetings” where clients and creatives brainstorm over half baked ideas, a process which he deeply mistrusts. Mediocrity is the enemy of the great. Say less – words get in the way. Let the audience fill in the story. Always convince your team that they are on the verge of greatness... they are looking to you for direction and affirmation, not shouting and bullying.

Integrity, heart, fit and message are all important. However if the goal of the book was to talk about the what makes advertising magic, Hegarty doesn't answer the question. Perhaps Hegarty is leaving it to the reader to fill in the details. He is charming though, which is what makes the book such an enjoyable read.

A casual stroll through decades of advertising

I enjoyed this book. Mr. Hegarty is someone I look up to and his book was able to lay bare something about advertising that is often not discussed enough: the human aspect. To be frank, I was expecting a book filled with more insightful factual knowledge, advertising jargon, rules of engagement, etiquette and the whole lot of do and don't do's, but his casual approach was a more than welcome and warm surprise. At times I felt like sitting across the table of Mr. Hegarty with a nice glass of wine and I would listen to his anecdotes and life experiences and sometimes he would lift his index finger and say: "Remember this. It will do you good to remember what I just said." And so I will. I am looking into starting my own career in the advertising industry and will keep his words in my mind and more importantly: In my heart. The place where, at the end, all good stories find their way to.

Radical runology at its best

While most modern popular books on runes focus on their use in divination, "ALU" goes much more deeply to the heart of the matter: the hows and whys of using runes in a modern way that is fully in line with their original holistic social, cultural, and spiritual context within ancient Germanic cultures. Furthermore, this presentation is not a collection of wishful musings, but is built upon a sound, serious foundation that does come--unapologetically--from decades of hard-won philological study.

The book is highly traditional in that the discussions of the symbolism of individual runes always privilege traditional material (the texts of the Rune Poems in their original languages, the little-known Icelandic m�lr�nakenningar, other medieval manuscripts dealing with runes, and so forth). The book is very modern, however, in that it considers this material alongside informed cultural-historical inferences based on the work of modern-day historians, medievalists, linguists, and other scholars, the majority of whom wrote in German or the Scandinavian languages. Similarly, the author takes current anthropological models of how magic functions and fruitfully applies these to the Germanic runic tradition. The resulting insights are sensible and practical, spiritually and mythically resonant, all at once. This is a rare accomplishment.

The Leading Scholar on Runes Brings Even More

Definitely worth the read! From one the most leading experts on runes today, comes new and great material for the advanced student. I have been practicing runes for 12 years now and have worked mostly out of Edred's books, so it is great that he has given us some new material to experiment with. This book Alu goes further to define the runes and how to awaken them with in the self. Also you get a better understanding of how to read the runes for divination. Most other authors try compare the runes to the tarot but the runes are runes not the tarot and should not be read in the same manner. That is one of the biggest frustrations with almost every author other on runes. They don't examine the tradition of Runelore and the Teutonic way which leads to them making up their own system. Edred shows his readers the true essence of the runes and how the were originally read and worked by Norsemen.

This book takes a more evolved look at stave lore than "Futhark" as is to be expected of a newer work. It is scholarly and the information is presented in a constructively subjective manner and given with as much objective supplementation as is fitting. The insights to operative use of runes would be too advanced for beginners but used in conjunction with Mr. Thorsson's other books makes a very complete view of rune study that just cannot be topped in terms of authenticity from primary and secondary sources.

A must have

Harmonic progression is (often) the first thing that comes in the songwriting process. If it's not the first thing and if your song is not based on a riff, you'll have to put chords somewhere in the process anyway.

To me, this book has a big advantage on all others "chords progression" books : it puts each chord progression in one of the 21 kinds that are referenced. So you know all kinds of progressions, all the variations you can make and on what hits it has been used.
A great thing too : the book distingues the different inversions or pedal that are used on the progressions.
I am an arranger and building a interesting bass line over a progression can really refresh that classic progression that people already heard one million times.

You won't "discover THE music secret" thanks to this book or write hit songs just by using one of the chords progression (and if you think that a book like this exists, I have some very bad news for you :) ) but you will have all the basic material for harmony in songwriting, at the same place. There is nothing more to look at, it's all there.

I also bought this book just to give me new ideas and change my habits. Check yourself, you might always use the same progressions ... I did and this book teaches me new ones (no big discovery but even if I know these chords, I don't really use them in that order), and gives me a new approach on the harmonic analysis of the progressions I frequently use.

PROFOUND & AWESOME

I wish I would have had this book ten years ago! After spending hundreds (yikes probably more) on music lessons, books, and dvd's for about ten years now- I bought this two weeks ago and the improvement in my understanding is immense. Suddenly the hours and hours of scales and chord inversions make sense! Hurray! I don't read written music (well, very poorly) and having a book that explains how songs (of all sorts) are put together means never having to buy a fake book again. So, he gives you the progression in roman numerals and then in C, then he lists quite a few songs (from diverse genre's) that use that progression- (yeah! Immediate application!) so while you practice the progression in various keys you are learning a quantity of songs at a time- AND becoming so familiar with that progression that you can HEAR it elsewhere. It makes "practicing" fun because you are playing songs instead of exercises, and developing an understand of how song patterns are repeated, which is the key to playing with other folks. If you have your basic theory down (know your major & minor chords, scales, basic transposing, and maybe some chord inversions) you can't go wrong with this book (and even if you don't, he has handy charts in the back). I wish I would have had this years sooner, but am so so glad to have it now. Quite possibly the most useful music book I've ever come across.

Useful but could use improvement

A fairly useful text but really needs an index. At least one instance of a chord ( a G(alt)) is not shown
In the chord list in the appendix. The major problem is sparcity of extended chord progression examples:
actual notation examples would have been helpful vice lists of song titles.

I was expecting a book I could use as a refference manual. This book isn't. However, as a self-teaching
text (the "now-you-try-it" exercizes are a nice touch) it is well worth the cost.
