Drawing analogies from the 19th-century discovery of the laws of thermodynamics, European social scientists envisioned the toiling worker's body as a "human motor," a living machine; maximizing work-force efficiency and eradicating the "disease" of fatigue seemed within reach. Psychologists and physiologists subjected the body's rhythms and movements to laboratory study. The psychiatric complaint of neurasthenia, or nervous exhaustion, was epidemic, and German scientists in the early 1900s sought a vaccine to cure fatigue. In a dense, rewarding study, Rabinbach ( The Crisis of Austrian Socialism ) shows how the "science of work," spreading beyond such areas as industrial management, physical education and accident prevention, pervaded the language of technocrats, Marxists and fascists who viewed the worker as a machine. He pinpoints a source of modern spiritual malaise: the transformation from a strictly work-centered society to one in which work has been abandoned as a source of self-fulfillment.

Good amount of historical human thermodynamic trivia.

The book is similar in theme and content to Mirowski's 1989 More Heat than Light (albeit less technically rigorous), containing interesting trivia tidbits, e.g. that German mathematician Carl Neumann, the first to introduce the d-hat derivative symbol for inexact differentials (1875), had views on how economic life related to energetic components of energy exchanges between people. I was not impressed. Some of the stories were ridiculous. I want to be turned on when I read novels with sexual content. This wasn't the case with theses stories. I wasn't particularly fond of any of the characters.

About the Author

Stan Gibilisco has authored or coauthored more than 50 books on physics, electronics, mathematics, and computing. He began his career as a radio-frequency design engineer, a technical writer, a magazine editor, and a wireless broadcast technician. The American Library Association named Stan’s McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Personal Computing (1995) as one of the “Best References of 1996.” In addition to authoring several books in McGraw-Hill’s Demystified series of home study guides, he has also written three books in the Know-It-All series for students who enjoy mathematics. Gibilisco’s Teach Yourself Electricity and Electronics has become a classic in the field.

How many authors take the time to make a comprehensive video series that presents and supports their entire book? Stan Gibilisco does just that with the third edition of Beginning Guide to Reading Schematics. Both the book and video series start with an explanation of what is involved in understanding electronic schematics. Block diagrams, component symbols, simple circuits, and complex circuits are all chapter titles. Each of these subjects is dealt with in an easy to read (and view) format. I have read the previous versions of this book and Stan has rewritten many sections, redrawn all the schematics, and included a new section that explains how each circuit works. Combining reading with viewing the YouTube videos will give a beginner as well as an "old hand" a new understanding and appreciation for electronics! I built the test board in the "Let's learn by doing" chapter and completed all the experiments. I found this great fun and recommend that all readers try them. Yes, there are nice videos supporting this section of the book too! All in all a great book and video series that I give five stars! Well done Stan!!

Stan Gibilisco's Beginner's Guide to Reading Schematics, Third Edition, goes way beyond what one would expect in a book of this title. The spring binding makes it easy to use on your work bench just as Stan's lucid writing and clear graphics make it incredibly useful for the serious student or experimenter on any level. The book starts out by defining what is meant by schematic representation and then goes on to present and discuss increasingly complex electronic circuitry, always explaining it in simple terms that the novice can easily understand yet are useful to the more advanced technician as well. I highly recommend this book for all electronics students who want to broaden their perspective without getting lost in the details. Stan has written many books on the subjects of electronics and mathematics (most published by McGraw-Hill) and the ones I have read have been immensely helpful.

Very clear and well written, but lacks the content I would expect from an $18 book.

I read the whole book and it's great! I mean, I've read mostly Navy Avionics schematics and a few schematics for components I've dealt with in flight simulation. So, my reading level is kind of limited. That's why I bought this book.

The reviews of the previous Beginner's Guide to Reading Schematics were great. So, I was expecting big things. What I found was that the 3rd edition does a phenomenal job of explaining how to look at schematics. Gibilisco compares a schematic to a map and by using that analogy he really pulls together an understanding of how to generally follow a schematic. That's my favorite part of this book. It's also a great reference for illustrated components you might find common to most schematics. But the book doesn't go into detail of how to understand the functionality of components through reading a schematic. Toward the end of the book you are given an opportunity for hands on applications that I'm sure help better understand schematics. I didn't do these but I could tell by looking at the exercises and the required hardware that they were limited in scope. One day I will spend the money and do the exercises but no matter, I will still be missing a large portion of understanding that was hoping to get from this book.

Curriculum text review

I purchased this book for a course I am taking, so it was required. The text is fairly straightforward, but would really benefit from more examples (across content areas) and more in depth explanations. I could really have used concept map examples for reading and writing curriculums. The end of chapter activities are great exercises, but how about an answer key? I am taking this course as a web-based class and would like more validation of my understanding. Overall, this book does a good job explaining the parts and steps involved in a thorough course development. I feel I have a solid foundation to start designing curriculum.

The first novel by Carl Hiaasen's ace Miami Herald crime-reporter colleague John Katzenbach stars a reporter who stumbles onto the story of his life in Miami's mean season, July. (It was adapted as the Kurt Russell/Mariel Hemingway film The Mean Season.) Katzenbach's tale blazes with local color, and his depiction of the newspaper life is accurate, entertaining, and animated by an interesting dilemma: What does a newshound do when he becomes part of the story he's covering?

That's what happens to Malcolm Anderson of The Miami Journal. One day in 1975, fate hands him Page One material: a beautiful teenager found with the back of her head removed by a .45 bullet. Katzenbach takes us through the reporter's paces: eliciting quotes from the victim's family and friends (the girls at school wonder who'll replace the deceased on the cheerleading squad); getting great "art" for the photographer; negotiating the story's space, timing, and emphases with the city editor.

But this is no ordinary killing. The only thing worse than a dead teen is a dead teen with a note in her pocket reading, "Number One." Worse yet, Malcolm gets a call at his desk from the "Numbers Killer," who taunts him with an elliptical account of his tormented childhood and violent Vietnam experiences. As Malcolm desperately tries to deduce the killer's motives and prevent the next murder, he wrestles with the terrible question of his own complicity. The bad guy here is just OK, but the reporter is a very good character, and the novel well merits its Edgar Award nomination. --Tim Appelo

Great read. Go find it in the nearest used book store

Any reader who enjoys reading serial killer novels must read this book. The interaction between the killer and the reporter contains some of the best dialogue I have ever read in a book of this type. Their conversations are definitely up there with some of the interactions in Thomas Harris' Hanibal trilogy. The protagonsit, a reporter, has to deal with the dilemma between his job as a reporter and his role as a citizen. This conflict adds wonderful insight into his character and his relationships with the secondary cast. The book is a fairly quick read, but is well written and definitely gives the reader something that one is not acccustomed to in these types of books. This is the kind of book that you should be searching the used books stores for. It is the first Katzenbach book and it absolutely will not be my last.

This book made J. Katzenback one of my favorite authors.

This book was the first book I had read from Mr. Katzenback, and is still probably my favorite. I passed the book along to my parents, friends, etc. and they all loved it. I love the fact that Mr. Katzenbach has a newspaper reporter background, because his book reflect his talent in writing. I have read all of his works, and because I am a true mystery thriller buff, I prefer those to the last recent Harts war, because I am not a fan of military novels as much, but my husband and all of his male co workers thought the book magnificent, and I have yet to get my hands on it. Mr. Katenbach, if you are listening, do you have any new books coming out soon. I am hoping for something along the lines of Mean Season 2, or something like that, not because your writing isn't just as wonderful in every book, but I read 3 to 4 books a week, and I have become somewhat finicky on what I like to read! Trying to expand my horizons..but those mysteries and your villians are some of the best villians I have read about. If you do read this and could let me know where your heart is leading you to in your next book and when you might be writing another, I would be thrilled to know. What a gift you have, it is rare that my husband and I read the same material, but we both love good writers, and you are one of the few that we both love. On a personal note, at 40 I am now at home on permant disability because of illness so books are my lifeline, and when I see a new J. Katzenbach, it is such a thrill, like I won a little lottery, and the thicker the book the better. So for this one fan I hope a mystery, serial killer (isn't that terrible no accounting for taste) book is coming soon. For such a pacifist, my friends tease me about my taste in books. Oh well. I was introduced to the script in my drama class a few months earlier and I was blown away. Lanford Wilson's grasp of the intense racism and emotions surging through each character is extraordinary. The Gingham Dog is a realistic portrayl of a nasty separation between Gloria (a black woman) and Vincent (a white man) because of fierce prejudice and opposing morals. It is an emotional rollercoaster that plays at heartstrings and leaves the reader with a better understanding of their own mistakes and views on racial, economic, personal, and familial relationships. A simple elegant moving piece to be read by anyone who happens to come across it.

A Chilling and Haunting Little Tale

Reading a novella like this is like watching a great little movie late at night. It was a couple of hours of intense reading and mystery with characters that are immediately interesting and somehow lost in life's tougher tragedies, a terribly abusive husband (the murderer), a stillborn birth that almost destroys a distraught mother, accidents waiting to happen to young curious children on a large estate where there is a lake and leaky boats. It all happens in an old and almost abandoned and yet manicured estate in France. It reminded me of the setting for horror shows from my youth where there are boogeymen hiding in the shadows. The elderly mother is in a wheel chair and is formally caring for her middle aged children who have come to recuperate from their recent tragedies and yet she isn't really emotionally available to them, somewhat mystified by their immature and stupid lives. The main character, "the woman" seems like she is dying and trying to get her children set up with their inheritances and perhaps even to recruit her brother to become their parents since her life is basically over.

The crazy and perhaps most terrifying element of the story is that the mother of the stillborn is literally hanging on to the dead baby and won't let it go to the point where the baby is going rancid and disintegrating. There is some kind of metaphor here for the state of the family, hanging on to something that has long since died.

And yet, by the end, there is a plan and redemption and we pretty much have a successful future course that will work for everyone.........and yet, do we and will it really work?

I love the novella. It's a great little escape into a very complex and yet believable world laid out very poetically.

Beautiful Language but Ultimately Disappointing

Ms. Leigh's writing has a rich and visual style. It's almost as though you are walking with the characters in the surreal atmosphere which pervades this novella.

I enjoyed the writing and I kept hoping, and hoping.... that the story would evolve to something more, something beyond the same story line and premise from which the book begins.

Without giving away too much of the plot, a brother and sister find themselves together at their mother's chateau after not having been there together for over a decade. The sister, referred to as 'the woman' throughout the book is escaping an abusive marriage. Her brother, Marcus, is dealing with the aftermath of the birth of a stillbotn baby after trying, with his wife, to get pregnant for many years. He is also dealing with his mistress, a young woman who calls him often on his cell phone but is never given her own character except as a young girl on scholarship. His wife, Sophie, can not bear to part with her dead infant who she carries with her as though she were still living. 'The woman's' son is conniving to get back to his father who has battered his mother. His sister appears passive and non-reactive.

The language is beautiful. I felt like I was there. However, the book could and should have been so much more. I was disappointed as it went on and on and on with no real change. I love Ms. Leigh's style and await her next book. I also intend to read her first book, 'Hunger'.

I am so deeply impressed with this little book! The story and characters were riveting from page one. Very mysterious and compelling-- a book I won't soon forget.
