I was introduced to the script in my drama class a few months earlier and I was blown away. Lanford Wilson's grasp of the intense racism and emotions surging through each character is extraordinary. The Gingham Dog is a realistic portrayl of a nasty separation between Gloria (a black woman) and Vincent (a white man) because of fierce prejudice and opposing morals. It is an emotional rollercoaster that plays at heartstrings and leaves the reader with a better understanding of their own mistakes and views on racial, economic, personal, and familial relationships. A simple elegant moving piece to be read by anyone who happens to come across it.

A Chilling and Haunting Little Tale

Reading a novella like this is like watching a great little movie late at night. It was a couple of hours of intense reading and mystery with characters that are immediately interesting and somehow lost in life's tougher tragedies, a terribly abusive husband (the murderer), a stillborn birth that almost destroys a distraught mother, accidents waiting to happen to young curious children on a large estate where there is a lake and leaky boats. It all happens in an old and almost abandoned and yet manicured estate in France. It reminded me of the setting for horror shows from my youth where there are boogeymen hiding in the shadows. The elderly mother is in a wheel chair and is formally caring for her middle aged children who have come to recuperate from their recent tragedies and yet she isn't really emotionally available to them, somewhat mystified by their immature and stupid lives. The main character, "the woman" seems like she is dying and trying to get her children set up with their inheritances and perhaps even to recruit her brother to become their parents since her life is basically over.

The crazy and perhaps most terrifying element of the story is that the mother of the stillborn is literally hanging on to the dead baby and won't let it go to the point where the baby is going rancid and disintegrating. There is some kind of metaphor here for the state of the family, hanging on to something that has long since died.

And yet, by the end, there is a plan and redemption and we pretty much have a successful future course that will work for everyone.........and yet, do we and will it really work?

I love the novella. It's a great little escape into a very complex and yet believable world laid out very poetically.

Beautiful Language but Ultimately Disappointing

Ms. Leigh's writing has a rich and visual style. It's almost as though you are walking with the characters in the surreal atmosphere which pervades this novella.

I enjoyed the writing and I kept hoping, and hoping.... that the story would evolve to something more, something beyond the same story line and premise from which the book begins.

Without giving away too much of the plot, a brother and sister find themselves together at their mother's chateau after not having been there together for over a decade. The sister, referred to as 'the woman' throughout the book is escaping an abusive marriage. Her brother, Marcus, is dealing with the aftermath of the birth of a stillbotn baby after trying, with his wife, to get pregnant for many years. He is also dealing with his mistress, a young woman who calls him often on his cell phone but is never given her own character except as a young girl on scholarship. His wife, Sophie, can not bear to part with her dead infant who she carries with her as though she were still living. 'The woman's' son is conniving to get back to his father who has battered his mother. His sister appears passive and non-reactive.

The language is beautiful. I felt like I was there. However, the book could and should have been so much more. I was disappointed as it went on and on and on with no real change. I love Ms. Leigh's style and await her next book. I also intend to read her first book, 'Hunger'.

Larger book than expected!

I wasn't paying attention to the number of pages or stories in this volume of Halloween stories. I just bought a single story of Scary Godmother and it was 40 pgs long. Very fun read.

When I ordered this book, I noticed the price was $8 used. I assumed it was a little rarer, but was stunned when I found out it's a collection of stories, over 300 pages! I love the cartoons that were made based on Jill Thompson's lovely stories. She's a good author and illustrator. The stories make me think of books I read as a kid.

For anyone who's young at heart, or has children who love imaginative fun stories, I HIGHLY recommend the Scary Godmother series! You will not be disappointed. The characters are cute and humorous. If you're into violence (I am also), then you might find these disappointing, but they are designed for children under 10 years old. I find the stories and artwork whimsical and the characters fun and memorable. It's a great addition to anything Halloween.

SPOOKTACULAR!

I started loving Scary Godmother when I was twelve and have watched the movies every year since then. Only now did I have the funds to purchase the books. I got both this comic collection and the hardcover picture-book collection which contains the two well known stories. If you're looking for the main story and "The Revenge Of Jimmy" this IS NOT the book that has them! HOWEVER, I do suggest buying this as long as you know THIS IS A GRAPHIC NOVEL and CONTAINS SOME CONTENT THAT YOU MAY NOT FIND APPROPRIATE FOR YOUNGER PEOPLE. Being 18 and an avid graphic novel collector it was only natural that I buy this. But it does have partial nudity (Scary and Ruby in their under-clothes), references to drinking/being drunk, child slavery, death, and if I'm not mistaken censored cussing (as in: @!^$). I urge that you are aware of this if you are thinking of buying it for a child or tween.

Now the content that is slightly more mature does not in any way, shape, or form take away from how fun this was and has been to read. I urge that you buy this because it contains many fun adventures with Scary, Hannah and Orson. You get tons more little activities for yourself or your kids (or children you may know) including healthy snacks, sandwiches, puzzles, arts and crafts, and coloring pages. You also get to explore more of The FrightSide, meet more of the monsters that live there, and even what everyone does during other holidays. And as a huge bonus you get to find out how Scary became a scary godmother (or should I say THE Scary Godmother). I found this such a joy to read and hardly wanted to put it down.

I've seen comics and other books get very negative and angry reviews on here because some people didn't read descriptions properly or thoroughly . So just to state /again/ THIS IS A GREAT COMIC BUT MAY NOT BE FOUND SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN.

Love it!

I just got this as a birthday gift,and,I love it! It is in black,and,white,except the cute little activities in the end,however,if you're as much a Scary Godmother fan as me,you won't mind it being in black,and,white. Be wary,though,that some people can't read black,and,white comics for a long time. Its over 200 pages overall,and,the stories aren't short reads,really,so,it lasts. Overall,it's a great buy,I love it!
