About the Author

Zora Neale Hurston, the author of Their Eyes Were Watching God, was deemed "one of the greatest writers of our time" by Toni Morrison. One of the best books I have ever read

I always thought of Toni Morrison as the leader, the queen, and the matriarch of black women's fiction, but the more I read of Zora Neale Hurston, the more I feel that everyone else must have taken their cues from her!

Her writing is enchanting and thought provoking, her use of "black" language is absolutely delightful. The story and the characters are interesting in and of themselves. What makes this work really shine is the language, and the heritage and history that it preserves. She takes care to write the way that people speak, resulting a unorthodox spelling and usage that at first I had to say out loud in order to properly understand. (My grandmother didn't have to do that, though, and for that reason alone, she loved Zora Hurston.) Ms. Hurston also uses words, idioms and phrases that are unique to black america, and that my generation would likely have lost -- the news of the "Black Dispatch," "Old Hannah" rising, "hittin' a straight lick with a crooked stick." Some of the sayings I remember my Grandmother using, and some I remember using as a child. I found all of them interesting and beautiful, and I am grateful to Ms. Hurston for finding them valuable enough to put down.

So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city. And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceedingly glad of the gourd. But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered. And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death. Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night: And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?

Jonah 4:5-11

Hurston's first novel, published in 1934, is a fictionalized account of the lives of her parents set in the post-Reconstruction South to the years that followed the First World War. The title refers to the Biblical prophet, who cared more about the death of the gourd vine that sheltered him from the sun than the people of the nearby town of Nineveh, who were at risk of annihilation at the hand of God.

John Crittenden is born out of wedlock in post-Reconstruction Alabama to Amy, who later marries Ned, a sharecropper and embittered former slave who constantly butts heads with the strapping "high yaller" boy who isn't his own. Weary of the abuse and threats of his stepfather, John travels to a nearby farm to work, and meets Lucy, a younger girl who he falls in love with and ultimately marries. However, John is a strong and handsome man who is desired by many women, and he takes full advantage of this, to the detriment of his wives and young children. The aftermath of one affair nearly lands him on a chain gang, and he escapes to Florida, where he eventually moves to Eatonville, one of the first all-black towns in the Deep South. After working as a carpenter and sending for his family he eventually becomes a gifted preacher, who is in high demand in neighboring towns. However, he has not lost his taste for the flesh despite his love of the Spirit, and the problems that caused him to flee Alabama come to haunt him and his family in Florida.

I enjoyed this debut effort by Hurston, with its rich characters and compelling story.

Football Widows

ONE
“Ww-what was that?”

B.J.’s pretty features twisted into a frown, and a perfectly groomed eyebrow rose. She tilted her head ever so slightly, straining to hear. B.J. needed a visual to go along with the foreign sound. It was so faint; it could’ve been her mind playing tricks. She stepped into her home’s foyer.

The cool, crisp air was a welcomed relief from the smoldering Los Angeles sun outside. Something wasn’t right; she could sense it. Maybe it’s nothing, she thought as she consciously stepped lightly on to the marble floor. In case someone was rummaging through her jewelry box, B.J. didn’t want to announce her arrival. Stranger things had happened.

There it was again!

This time, her heart slammed into her ribcage and her eyes quickly darted around the room. This was no figment of her imagination. She was certain she had heard something. She searched for anything that might be out of place, but nothing appeared to be. Maybe she should’ve grabbed something she could use as a weapon. She quietly closed the door and reached for her cell phone, fully prepared to call for help if needed.

Where could the noises be coming from? The house was supposed to be empty. Her husband’s car wasn’t in the driveway; she assumed he was still at the Los Angeles Sea Lions training camp. Their two young kids were still away with their grandmother so the nanny had been given some time off. B.J. herself was supposed to be relaxing at a resort in Palm Springs.

But it was like some evil force was trying to keep B.J. from her much needed mini-vacation. She and the other NFL coaches’ wives usually took a break before the hectic season began. But this year, things had started off on the wrong foot from the very beginning.

First, Ella Blu, the wife of one of B.J.’s husband’s assistant coaches, and the last person still willing to take the trip, had backed out at the last minute. Ella said her husband, Melvin, had begged her to stay home. Since they were having problems, B.J. figured she’d let Ella slide.

Determined to salvage the trip, however, she decided to head out alone. But then, as B.J. drove down I-10, her tire blew out. When her husband didn’t answer his cell, she was forced to wait nearly two hours for the AAA tow truck driver to come and fix the flat. Once on the road again, it was nearly an hour before she realized she didn’t have any of the paperwork needed to get into the exclusive resort. She reluctantly turned around and headed back home.

By the time she pulled up to her Brentwood home, she wasn’t sure if she even had the energy to venture back out today.

There it was again, that sound. Something told B.J. not to call out as she had started to do when she first heard the faint noise. She placed her designer Hobo on the bottom stair and followed the noises around the cascading staircase and toward the back of the house where the master bedroom was located. The sounds, although still faint, were becoming clearer.

Her steps suddenly became heavy, each more challenging than the one before. By the time she made it toward the hallway that led to her bedroom, B.J. experienced a sudden surge of adrenaline. She could feel a lone trickle of sweat running down her back. Her heartbeat began to race, and her throat suddenly went dry, but still, she cautiously padded toward the bedroom.

“What the hell…” she murmured, struggling to believe her ears.

By the time B.J. reached the door and clutched the doorknob, there was no denying those were sounds of passion that filled the air.

B.J. felt her face burn, and the vein on the side of her neck begin to throb. She swallowed back tears that felt like broken glass gliding down her tightening throat, but she managed a rugged deep breath, then blew it out.

When she finally mustered up the strength to push the door open, her eyes instantly locked on those of a naked young woman who was riding her husband atop her king-sized bed. It felt as if the air had been sucked out of the room as she stood trying to process what she was looking at. B.J.’s mouth fell open, but she was too irate to utter a single word.

“OHMYGOD!” the woman cried and froze mid-stride.

At first B.J.’s own voice seemed trapped in her throat. Her eyes narrowed to slits and tears started to burn in their corners.

“I can’t believe this shit!” she spat, finally finding her voice.

“Oh, Jesus!” She heard Taylor, her husband, before she could actually see him.

“Don’t call on Jesus now, you bastard!” Sheer venom dripped from B.J.’s words. “And you!” she hissed toward the woman.

Suddenly, it was like a scene from a movie; everything seemed to be moving in slow motion. Taylor bolted upright and inadvertently shoved the woman to the floor. She tumbled down and quickly began to scramble for cover.

B.J. stood, still trying to comprehend the scene that played out before her eyes. As the wife of an NFL head coach, she’d been through quite a bit over the years, but nothing could’ve prepared her for the heart-wrenching situation she had stumbled onto. Her husband had brought another woman into their bed.

“I can, um, I can explain!” Taylor stammered as he also tried to find cover.

“In our home? In our bed? How could you?!” B.J. shrieked, utterly disgusted. “And of all people for you to stab me in the back with!”

Beside herself, B.J. grabbed the antique vase and flung it toward the headboard.

“You sick bastard!” she screamed. “And you, you backstabbing bitch!”

Taylor ducked and the vase smashed into the wall.

“Wait, B.J., hold on a sec,” he managed to get out. “Ella, get dressed and get out!” he instructed the woman. “Hurry!” he added.

By now, Ella had found her clothes. But she was huddled in a corner crying and shaking as she tried to get dressed.

“I’m so sorry, B.J. I’m so sorry.” She sobbed.

“You’re sorry!” B.J. screamed and lunged toward her. But Ella was way on the other side of the room.

B.J. was frantically looking around the room as if trying to find something else to throw at her husband. But this gave Taylor time to scramble up from the bed and tackle his wife before she could find another weapon. He cradled her body as she struggled to break free.

Ella quickly got up, stepped over them, and hurried out of the room as B.J. and Taylor continued to wrestle on the floor.

As the head coach of the Los Angeles Sea Lions, Taylor Almond and his wife B.J. are NFL royalty. While coach and his assistant coaches were away at training camp, B.J. and the assistant coaches' wives were headed to the spa for the weekend. After Mona, Lawna and Jewel cancelled, B.J. and Ella Blu still planned to meet. A last minute cancellation and a flat tire, it just seemed that B.J. was destined to be home. Upon arriving home, she catches her husband in their bed with one of the assistant coaches' wives. If that weren't bad enough, it's one of her so-called dear friends she was supposed to be spending the weekend with.

As B.J. shares the information with the rest of their intimate group, she learns that they had previously heard the rumors that their friend was a little too close with coach. Infuriated, B.J. sets out to exact revenge on the entire group. What happens to a woman scorned who you've shared all of your dirt with? She writes a tell-all book!

The ladies desperately try to reason with B.J. in order to keep what they do off the field private. However, B.J. refuses to listen. Each one of them has learned to deal with their husband's lack of attention, the groupies, rumors, lies, secrets and infidelities in their own special ways. Now they have to watch as their lives crumble in the public eye. Can their marriages and lifestyles survive the ridicule?

I was immediately enamored with the title FOOTBALL WIDOWS as well as the cover. I loved that the drama is kicked right off and by time we get to the final down, the ladies have grown. The story doesn't seem to be complete. Sure we get the full story, but it seems as if it's been intercepted some. Even with that said, I will be checking for more of Pat Tucker in the future.

Be careful your secrets might come back to haunt you.

TWO WORDS DESCRIBE THIS BOOK...GREAT READ!!!!!

Okay, so I've read a few of Pat Tucker's books. The one thing that I can say about Pat is that her writing is always full of suprises, twists, turns, and you are always guaranteed to see one of her characters go over the edge. I always enjoy reading this authors work, because all of her writing is always different. Once again Pat delivered a solid read that will have her readers under the covers with a flash light trying to finish the book. Your man is definitely going to be mad that you won't put this book down and pay him some attention. Am I reading correctly that this book may have a sequel in the making????? I for one definitely want to know what Sasha comes up with next...but not before we find out about that scandalous Lachez from Daddy by Default. LOVED IT!!!

Katherine M. Hertlein, PhD, is an associate professor and Program Director of the Marriage and Family Therapy program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She has published over 50 articles, 6 books, and 25 book chapters over the course of her career. She presents nationally and internationally on sex, technology, and couples.

Gerald R. Weeks, PhD, ABPP, is a certified sex therapist with 30 years of practice experience, and is a professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He is among a handful of individuals to be given the “Outstanding Contribution to Marriage and Family Therapy” award in 2009 from the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy, and was named the “2010 Family Psychologist of the Year.” He has published over 20 books in the fields of individual, couple, family, and sex therapy.

Nancy Gambescia, PhD, is a certified sex therapist with 35 years of practice experience, and is the Director of the postgraduate sex therapy program at Council for Relationships in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She also maintains a private practice specializing in relationship and sex therapy in Rosemont, PA. Dr. Gambescia has published numerous book chapters, journal articles, and 5 books in couple and sex therapy.

Who knew sex could be so boring.

This book makes sense and sex therapy seem very boring. It isn't that the subject should be super exciting, but I shouldn't want to become a celibate monk or fall asleep while reading about it either. It is a run of the mill text book.

This book is ABSOLUTELY true! It provides extremely detailed and logical insight into the mindset of Asian luxury consumers, backed by easy-to-understand graphs and charts. The information in this book is well-researched and supported; this is useful for anyone looking to venture into the luxury business in Asia. It is also a must-read for anyone even remotely interested in luxury brands; the book is written in a very enticing manner that isn't in the least bit boring! Definitely will be a favorite on my bookshelf.

Good insight on Asian market

If you are thinking about investing a business in Asia, this is one of the books you must read. You'll learn a lot about what Asian people in different countries think and behave and reasons behind all their behaviors. One drawback is that the auther didn't go deeper in Southeast Asian markets. I would love to know more about SE Asia since they are totally unique markets. People assume that they are just like China, but they are not.

INCREDIBLE book. Period.

Wow, I can’t believe there is not one review of this book yet. If you have this book, please review it. If you do not have it, buy it. Or at least check out the sample as soon as possible. Trust me. This is hands down the best book on CBT for clients I have ever seen, and I’ve gone read many. The information is laid out in a coherent, easy to follow format and the author lays everything out in an extremely practical way that you can start applying right away. The information in this book has already begun changing my life for the better. It allows me to challenge my assumptions and be happier and more effective in a day to day basis. It's an absolute must-read. This goes up with the top two books I have ever read, the second being The Mood Cure by Julia Ross. CBT has stood the test of science time and time again and is considered the gold standard for evidence based therapies that actually work. And this book is complete and comprehensive overview of that philosophy. Great book.
