Nothing Short Of A Masterpiece

This collection of art spanning the Oddworld series is amazing. As such a huge a fan of all the games I can't tell you how much I appreciate them releasing a book of this magnitude. These artists are pros and I highly respect their skills and seeing how they went through the creative process with the characters is incredibly enjoyable. If you are a hardcore fan of the games you must own this or if you are a collector who appreciates masterful works of art you too must own this.

As art books go, this is simply as good as it gets. The book is beautifully printed, the pages are large and vivid, and the art is simply second to none. Aside from that, there's just nothing more to say. If you like the Oddworld games, or you just like good art, you can't go wrong here. It's very, very hard to imagine an art book being any higher quality than this.

About the Author
Craig Forcese is an Associate Professor of Law, Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa. There, he teaches administrative law, public international law, and national security law and runs the annual foreign policy practicum. Much of his present research and writing relates to democratic accountability, national security, and international law. Prior to joining the law school faculty, he practiced law with the Washington D.C. office of Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP, specializing in international trade law. Craig has law degrees from the University of Ottawa and Yale University, a B.A. from McGill, and an M.A. in international affairs from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, Carleton University. He is a member of the bars of Ontario, New York and the District of Columbia.

He is author of "National Security Law" (Irwin Law, 2008)and co-author of " The Laws of Government" (Irwin Law 2005) and "International Law: Doctrine, Practice and Theory " (Irwin Law, 2007).

Kent Roach is a Professor of Law at the University of Toronto where he holds the Prichard Wilson Chair in Law and Public Policy. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2002. His eleven books include Constitutional Remedies in Canada (winner of the 1997 Owen Prize), Due Process and Victims' Rights: The New Law and Politics of Criminal Justice (shortlisted for the 1999 Donner Prize), The Supreme Court on Trial: Judicial Activism or Democratic Dialogue (shortlisted for the 2001 Donner Prize), September 11: Consequences for Canada (named one of the five most significant books of 2003 by the Literary Review of Canada) and (with Robert J. Sharpe) Brian Dickson: A Judge's Journey (winner of the 2004 J. W. Dafoe Prize). He is co-editor of the first and second editions of Global Anti-Terrorism Law and Policy and has served with the Commission of Inquiries into both Maher Arar and the bombing of Air India Flight 182. He has appeared before working groups and legislative committees in Canada, Indonesia and the United States and is a member of the International Task Force on Terrorism, Democracy and the Law.

As someone interested in staying healthy (after serious illness) I found this book very helpful. Full of practical information and fascinating facts - and even though it is a book for a health professional - it was easy to read and understand. It's been a good reference resource since my first reading during the summer.

Superhero YA Adventure

This book is basically like Percy Jackson meets Avengers. It starts out with Marrow- he is the main character- trying to score really high on his superhero placement test. He's basically a really powerful superhero who has the power to change his bone density, allowing him to smash through walls and jump really really high since he can make himself very heavy or very light. He gets teamed up with his least favorite superhero as his sidekick, Flex. Flex has stretchy powers, and Marrow think that's kind of dumb. They end up having to figure out how to work together even though sometimes they really get on each other's nerves. There's a super awesome climax that I won't spoil here, with twists that you don't expect. You just have to read it for yourself.

I would see this book is really good for anyone who likes Hunger Games or Maze Runner, but it also has an added touch of humor that makes it unique. It's especially awesome if you love comic books or superheroes. Even if you don't you will be engaged with the story. I recommended it!

There's nothing wrong with the premise of Marrow - only in the execution.

Our main character has a superpower that would kill him the way he uses it. The reader is left to guess whether our hero doesn't understand that he's super strong and borderline invulnerable or if someone flat-out lied to him about it. The ability to increase your bone density doesn't make you stronger. Just the opposite, in fact. It would weigh you down. At one point he smashes through a car - and does so without so much as a scratch. Your bones could be solid steel, but your skin and organs would still be pulped.

Our main character is 14 years old, for reasons that escape me. Maybe because despite being lauded as a genius, he's really, really slow on the uptake? His age might be an excuse for the reader to cut him some slack. Honestly, it's fine - I'd just cut the line or two where people praise him for being smart. I don't see superheroes lining up to train fourteen year olds, though. The liability insurance alone would be insane. Was the age chosen just to avoid too much romantic subplot? To aim the book at younger readers? It comes off as being an arbitrary and poorly justified choice.

Telekinetic + Telepathic does not equal Omnipotent. Again, I could see how the writer wants to stress what a useful, powerful combo that would be... but 'all powerful' is a bit much. It was such a bad choice of term it yanked me right out of the narrative. Why not 'Advanced Mind' or 'Dual-aspect Mentat,' or just about anything that actually pertains to mental powers and not godhood?

One person in every 20 in this world has superpowers. That's insane. That's six or seven times as many demigods walking around as there are rich people. You'd be overrun by villains. FedEx would be entirely staffed by teleporters and speedsters. Never mind superheroes, if 5% of the cops have powers. Also the military... you'd have super-geniuses running businesses and colleges and the unpowered would be all but literally begging for scraps. Even if most people with powers have minor powers, that many of them would seriously reorder the society in ways that aren't touched on in this story.

All that having been said - it was a fun read. Well paced, with characters that weren't unlikable. I would have preferred to see the protagonists aged another five years, and the book doubled in length and taken more seriously by the author... I'm glad I read it, but... there was a lot of potential here that was never explored.

A book worth getting lost in! "He's Batman!"

I know when I am really into a book, because I will stop reading at certain parts and wait until I have a secluded area and plenty of time, with no interruptions, so I can get everything I can out of a scene. While reading Marrow, I had many moments like that. The writing style I found to be quirky, and full of originality. It was just plain, good writing and it flowed. The way the protagonist, Marrow, describes certain places and people made me laugh. I loved his cocky attitude, and his good heart. It had great twists here and there, and I loved that the story unfolded in a non predictable way. It was a new take on superheroes, and yes, just saying "He's Batman," does justify any situation. You'll understand when you read it.
