how to make a telescope

I'm sorry, this is my first review. How could amazon fail to give a good synopsys of this book? Anything by texereau is pretty much a definitive work on telescope making and mirror making. He gives good explanations, gives the math behind stuff. He also gives the best explanations of how to polish and parabolize a mirror that i have seen. Before you buy Ingalls book buy this one.

Most In-Depth Mirror Making Tome

This is the book that scared me away from buying it for years because of the heavy math. The first version I saw was in 1966 and it was a lot thinner than what is available now. I finally picked it up at a used bookstore in 2002. By that time I was not longer making mirrors. I just wanted it for my library.

This book goes into excruciating detail on mirror testing and despite the complexity, I gleaned a few things from it that I wish I'd known twenty years ago when I made my last mirror!

It has a lot of extra material that I'm sure wasn't in the much thinner original version I saw in the 60's. Whoever updated it did an excellent job though even now, as another reviewer noted, much of the info is outdated.

This is another essential book that every mirror maker should have in his or her library. If you are just starting out, get it, but I'd recommend the books by Howard and Thompson over this one unless you are a math wiz. Still, highly recommended.

Learn AI with Ruby

Ruby is a great programming language to learn and it can be used for many different purposes. One of them is artificial intelligence and this book explains in a simple and understandable manner how to do it. There are lots of practical examples in the book so it is easy to follow, but I would recommend at least some of the basic knowledge of Ruby before starting with this book. It is not complicated, but AI is very complex and you would do yourself a favor with familiarizing with the basic principles. Other than that, this is a very good guidebook.

Not bad; not good

Well... it's not a bad book but I don't think it covers "AI" in more than a very generic sense. The author introduces a few simple techniques for resolving schedules via brute force iterative approach (not inappropriate for many use cases), simple case logic, and a few tree/acyclic graph solvers. As a very basic introduction to these types of problems it's not a bad introduction. He touches on algorithmic complexity of the approaches but avoids detailed discussion of the algorithms behind the methods. Ruby code is given for all approaches and it's easy to follow. There's a very brief intro to enough Ruby to understand the code even if you've never touched Ruby.

I can't heavily recommend it but I also think the book achieves a reasonable set of goals for its (apparent) intended audience. I'm reluctant about the use of "AI" in the title and text but it's a loaded term in any case so I'll let that go. Don't buy the book -- even at the low cost -- without using Amazon's "look inside" feature to at least view the table of contents and sample pages. With these caveats, it might be useful to a Ruby -- or other beginning -- programmer needing quick solutions to similar problems as covered in this short book. If you're not in that category, I'd skip it and pick up a good general algorithm text covering data structures and searching.

BTW, the Kindle version is a much better buy if you decide you're a fit.

Not as good as it was disturbing and depressing

I get that this is an accurate account of the life of a raging drug addict, but as a drug counselor I found it disturbing and depressing. One of the guys at my rehab saw me with it and asked if he could read it when I'm done. Um.......no.

It's been a few weeks since I finished Wasting Talent, and Damien Cantwell feels like a bad dream I can't shake. This book was written in such an up close and personal way it is hard to break away from it without feeling as if the main character is someone you know, someone you wish you didn't have to know and watch struggle. The depiction of drug addiction was so accurate, I at times felt the need to check my hands to see if they were shaking because my own memory of withdrawal was brought with such force to the front of my mind - I couldn't stop nodding my head along with the main character, mouthing the words 'I get it, man'. Let me be clear, I absolutely loved every minute of this book and I identified with the main character so strongly it made it difficult to put down. Leone perfectly captures the inner dilemma and lack thereof when faced with an addiction that quiets all other aspects of self- there is no such thing as a moral compass anymore, yet in brief moments you see a glimmer of the person Cantwell could have been, started out to be, and it becomes even more heartbreaking than it already was. It is impossible to stop rooting for him, despite everything he does, which is what I find the most accurate of all. Cantwell is that best friend in your life you just want to get better, who you believe in and support against all odds, fighting for them because you see the immeasurable talent within them that could provide them a life of happiness and freedom if only they were willing to let it, if only they could begin to fathom a life without drugs. I love this book, and while it is a fictional novel, I have yet to come across something more honest and accurate to the drug addicted lifestyle, and how it changes people. I found it impossible to not understand Damien, his sense of humor, and his reasoning behind all actions. The urgency in which he administers drugs in situations with heightened stress and danger, as well as situations with virtually none at all- how they parallel, how he acknowledges that this is no longer a desire it is a NEED, that there is something inside him that he needs to kill and that can only be accomplished with a complicated series of drugs and alcohol that he understands the effects of too well. Damien is an excellent example of what it is to be a drug addict, to love a drug addict, and to have your heart broken by a drug addict - over and over and over again.

About the Author
Andrea Lunsford, Louise Hewlett Nixon Professor of English emerita and former Director of the Program in Writing and Rhetoric at Stanford University, joined the Stanford faculty in 2000. Prior to this appointment, Lunsford was Distinguished Professor of English at The Ohio State University (1986-2000). She has also been Associate Professor and Director of Writing at the University of British Columbia (1977-86). Currently a member of the faculty of the Bread Loaf School of English, Professor Lunsford earned her B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Florida and completed her Ph.D. in English at The Ohio State University (1977).
Professor Lunsford's scholarly interests include contemporary rhetorical theory, women and the history of rhetoric, collaboration and collaborative writing, current cultures of writing, intellectual property and composing, style, and technologies of writing. She has written or coauthored many books, including Essays on Classical Rhetoric and Modern Discourse; Singular Texts/Plural Authors: Perspectives on Collaborative Writing; and Reclaiming Rhetorica: Women in the History of Rhetoric, as well as numerous chapters and articles. For Bedford/St. Martin’s, she is the author of The St. Martin's Handbook, The Everyday Writer, EasyWriter, and Writing in Action; the co-author (with John Ruszkiewicz) of Everything’s an Argument and (with John Ruszkiewicz and Keith Walters) of Everything’s an Argument with Readings; and the co-author (with Lisa Ede) of Writing Together: Collaboration in Theory and Practice.
Professor Lunsford has conducted workshops on writing and program reviews at dozens of North American universities, served as Chair of the Conference on College Composition and Communication, as Chair of the Modern Language Association Division on Writing, and as a member of the MLA Executive Council.

From the 1st 5 minutes of picking up this book the Presence of God fell. As I read about John Paul's experience in the throne room and embraced the principles he teaches I could feel the atmosphere of heaven increase. This is more than a book, it is an experience!

John Paul's account of the Throne Room of God is wonderfully described and will transform your fleshly ideas of God. The only reason I gave this four stars instead of five is because it leaves you wanting more in depth descriptions of his encounter.

Guided meditation contemplating the throne room, not a retelling of his visit.

I just read the book which I got here at Amazon. No where does he claim that he was 7 days in heaven. Instead, he states in the opening this book is based on a spiritual experience he had, and there are about 3 places where he tells something brief about his own visit to heaven. The 7 days in this book are not about his own visitation, but instead this book is fashioned as a guided meditation for the reader, where the reader reads one of the "days" one day at a time, and meditates on the thoughts presented just concerning a small aspect of the throne room.

This book is written as a guided meditation by the author on which he has the reader imagine and meditate on each section on the thoughts about being in the presence of God to give the reader a guided mental imagining on what it can feel like standing before God, but only a very small telling of it. The chapters are not his visitations factual telling, but instead food for thought to contemplate a particular aspect of what it would be like for the reader in the heavenly throne room theme he presents in that guided meditation.

I was disappointed it was not about his own experience. He did include a couple of woven in snippets, but I purchased the book hoping it was just about his experience that I had heard him allude to in a couple of interviews. I still am trying to find if he has actual written about that visitation in full. Haven't yet found it because that is what I want to read. If you know this is a guided meditation inspired by his own visitation, and you want to meditate about being in the throne room, what it may be like, from the personal sensations, and not a detailed description of an actual trip there, this is a nice little book, but it is made like a gift book, in that it is sparse in the chapters for meditation purposes and not a regular story.
