Couldn't finish it

I loved the first book in this series. The intimacy/sex with the aliens was a bit odd for my taste in the first book yet it didn't go overboard so I looked past it, but because it had even more of a focus in this second book of the series it just felt too weird so I couldn't finish reading it. I only got through the first 4 chapters before I said 'yech' and deleted it. The author does such a great job describing how grotesque these aliens look with their squiggling tentacles and all of that so then to picture them getting erotic with the humans was just way too gross for me.

Couldn't get through it

Octavia Butler's work has been recommended to me time and again. I chose this series to be my first exploration of her work since it was so highly rated by other reads. Truth is, I could barely get through the first book, and I quit the second book halfway through. The characters weren't compelling, I couldn't connect with them on any personal level, and the story line dragged.

Behind it all, an enigmatic foreigner manipulates Veridon’s leaders toward a goal that would destroy Veridon and tear asunder the very essence of life. Burn thought he had nothing to lose, but protecting Veridon could cost him the one thing he has left… his life.

Dead On

First let me say I do not like writing reviews. In fact I dislike it intensely and I am not good at it. Of the more than the 1000+ scifi/fantasy books that I have read I have only ever written four reviews. This will be the fifth. However for the right work of fiction I am willing to step up and give it a try.

Why did I review this book and why should you read it? First I greatly enjoyed reading Dead of Veridon and I think you will too. Second it has new and interesting ideas and plot twists. Third I am surprised by some of these twists. Having read widely I have usually seen the plot before. I am usually able to guess the outcomes of the story before we reach that point. Not with this book. Fourth and finally I think that this book deserves to be read. Tim Akers has put together a rich fantasy world in a setting of urban steampunk decay with noir detective work and characters that fit. Though there are greater magical forces at work the protagonist is not one of them and so he tends to get kicked around and beaten down. Mixed with inventive villains and grim realism this book is worth your time.

If you enjoyed reading Heart of Veridon or Horns of Ruin then you should read Dead of Veridon.

If you like the works of China Mieville or a gritty steampunk version of Neil Stephenson then I think you will enjoy reading Dead of Veridon and all of Tim Akers other works.

I really like Tim Akers' work so I was surprised at this ...

"Heart of Veridon" was a dream of a book. "Dead of Veridon" followed in that mold up until the end which felt rushed and unfinished; leaving some things hanging. I really like Tim Akers' work so I was surprised at this - otherwise it would have been 5 stars for sure. "Dead..." is described as the terminal novel in the two book series even tho the end felt more like a set up for more.

Great book, easy to read!

The book covers all parts of a web application like data managing, caching, session, interfaces and the frontend. The author describes all the layers by explaining them with a lot of real world samples. The main focus is really on scalability aspects, which are covered in all chapters. The book also contains good design guides for writting high quality software.
If you're on the way to design and implement a scaleable web application, this book contains a lot of usefull information for you.

Personalmente me ha dejado un poco a medias. Esperaba bastante m�s. Es cierto que dice muchas cosas interesantes, pero creo que las historias son un poco demasiado largas. Adem�s, la �ltima parte no me ha parecido nada interesante en comparaci�n a las dos primeras.

Creo que el autor peca un poco de jugar con el recurso de dejarte con lo bueno para el final. Cuando lo bueno llega, es poca cosa. Da pocas explicaciones.

About the Author
Sandra J. Savignon is Professor of Speech Communicaton and Director of the Graduate Program in English as a Second Language at The Pennsylvania State University. Prior to coming to Pennsylvania, she was founding dirctor of the multidisciplinary doctoral program in Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education(SLATE). She was founding editor of Addison-Wesley Second Language Professional Library and served on the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)Committee of Examiners for the Educational Testing Service and has been a consultant on language testing to various state and national commissions. Sheis past President of the American Association for Applied Linguistics and currently convenor of the Scientific Commission for Teacher Education of the International Association for Applied Linguistics. Among her previous publications is the first edition of Communicative Competence: Theory and Classroom Practice, winner of the Modern Language Association of America Kenneth W. Mildenberger Medal for a Distinguished Research Publication in the Teaching of Foreign Languages and Literatures. She lectures frequently and has offfered seminars and workshops for language teachers in the United States, Canada, South America, Europe and Asia. Her nonprofessional life revolves around her family: her husband Gabriel, their three children, Daniel, Catherine, and Julie, and grandchildren Joseph, Caitlin, and Madeleine.

Knight has gained notoriety as the medium (or "channel") claiming to be in contact with Ramtha, the spirit of a warrior who supposedly lived in ancient Atlantis. Her pedestrian, self-indulgent autobiography skims the occult, focusing instead on her formative experiencesa brutal uncle who raped her when she was four; a girlhood spent in poverty in New Mexico; her blossoming sexuality during adolescence; her three marriages, the third for love. Yet the paranormal keeps intruding. During a slumber party, she saw a UFO. Fighting a near-fatal illness through meditation, she sent an electrical shock through her body that, she claims, cured her. And then there is Ramtha who keeps materializing in her kitchen in flowing purple robes, mouthing wisdom in stilted diction ("God be that which is termed your birthright"). This soggy psychic saga is only for the already converted.

"A State of Mind, My Story" offers a biograpical look into JZ Knight, before, after, and during Ramtha channeling. This text may be, as a reviewer suggested, easier understood by those already on a spiritual path.

However, this book is recommended for RSE students, curious entities, and those whom wish to further understand the beginning adventures of our enlightened one.
