Professional artist Thaneeya McArdle is the creator of the best-selling 13-title Design Originals coloring book series from Fox Chapel Publishing. She is the author and illustrator of two art instruction books, Draw Groovy and The Everything Girls Ultimate Body Art Book. Based in Florida, she works in painting, drawing, and mixed media, with a special focus on vibrantly detailed whimsical art. Lovely book of 32 Designs to set your Coloring Spirit Free

Some of the designs have messages – such as “Stay Weird” (something that I, as an ex-Austinite of many years, can appreciate.) From dream catchers to unicorns to magic lanterns, this is a cute and fun new coloring book by Thaneeya McArdle.

In addition to the designs, the artist has included lessons in drawing, patterning, color techniques and media (including shading) as well as basic color theory at the front of the book, along with some great color examples (some of which I will show in my attached photos.) The lessons are generic to the color book line but the samples are specific to the designs in this book.

The pages are white and are perforated for easy removal. The designs are printed on one side only with lovely quotes on the back. The quotes have to do with being in touch with your own spirit, soul, and desires. Below the quotes are lines which the colorist can use to journal their own thoughts and feelings.

All of my markers and gel pens wick through these pages. If I use either of them, I will put a piece of thicker paper or freezer paper under the page I am working on to keep the following page from getting ink on it.

I love all of Design Originals coloring books. Beautiful images that are challenging enough to keep me interested, but easy enough I can complete them even with a toddler running crazy!

I really like the book

I didn't buy this on Amazon, but wanted to give it a review. I have colored one page out of this book so far, I really like the book. The pages are printed on one side only, so when the Sharpies bleed through, it's not a huge deal. I haven't had any issues with the pages ripping or anything. Nice book. Glad I purchased.

It seems rather dated

I am about 6 chapters into the book and I am finding references to versions of the Android SDK from 2 and 3 years ago as if they were just released or are the current SDK. The current SDK is KitKat 4.4.2 not HoneyComb 3.x. Makes me wonder......

Great story but unpredictable quality with different orders

I originally purchased this book in September, it showed up in excellent condition, great quality and the story was even better. Initial review was "kids loved it."
However, 3 months later in December, I ordered several more copies to give away as Christmas gifts- these showed up completely different- same great story but the print quality was horrible, some text/images were blurred. I was able to get them exchanged and the replaced copies were again like the first, but what a hassle! I understand that this is an indie published book but my complaint is with the unpredictable printing quality/material.

My little brother loves the book! He's a big fan of basketball and Curry so I figured I'd get it for him. I've read the book to him more times than I can count and we've been going out to play basketball even more.

Great story about sticking it out and not giving up

Great story about sticking it out and not giving up. I got this for my nephew who loves basketball but doesn't always like to do what it takes to get the end result. I'm hoping once he reads this it will offer him some extra encouragement. Illustrations are very well done. Great book for any kid who loves the game and who could also use a little encouragement and inspiration.

A must addition to any designer's toolkit

As designers we know designing should be an iterative process and this book delves into teaching how to navigate this process by improving your communication skills. I specially liked the idea of keeping in mind the human side of the design practice: we are not only designing for human, we are also humans creating the designs. Therefore we need to truly connect with the people that will make possible those designs. This connection is what can enable us to work as a team and produce the best user experiences.

Plus the book is a joy to read as it combines great story telling and practical advice. Highly recommended!

Useful Information at any point of your careeer

Tom and O'Reilly have put together a great book. It's approachable and casual while maintaining an intelligent and authoritative air, which is exactly the kind of thing Tom is encouraging all designers (or anyone interacting with stakeholders really) to do.

ADD goes from personal anecdote, to practical advice, and back. This makes the reading interesting, the information helpful, and the ways to apply his experiences and subsequent take-aways to your own life/career a straightforward process. The information Tom provides in this book feels so obvious and intuitive. Yet while reading it, I found myself realising I was only practicing half or so of the techniques he suggests, despite years of experience working with a wide range of clients. The things I did already know and do mindfully, I found validating to see someone else express in a published book. A great way to shore up some confidence, and build upon that foundation.

Overall, this is a great book. It's easy to read. It's not about the nitty-gritty of technical design process. It's a higher-level book that discusses concepts and techniques that will help you be a better person and a better designer to work with. After all, no one works in a vacuum (except vacuum repairmen and astronauts).

I value this book like a Mormon boy values his scriptures. I keep two physical copies in the house and one next to the seat of my car. Of course, I also keep the digital version with me in my Kindle app and even purchased a PDF version from O'Reilly to use on my iPad Pro so I can write in the margins all of the inspirational thoughts induced by reading the book. I even make it a point to read every footnote, highlighting the ones that really stand out to me, for better understanding of the context. I find that when I don't read even just a couple of paragraphs of this book each day I fall into the temptations of not articulating my design decisions as well, or even at all. As an amateur designer turned developer, I feel like it has helped me to not only better communicate with stakeholders in projects in which I'm involved, but also has given me methods, vocabulary, and a better angle for speaking with designers.
