About the Author
Dan Petersen is a consultant in safety management and organizational behavior. He was responsible for creating the Graduate Program in Safety Management at the University of Arizona. He has held Director-level positions with Allstate, Nationwide and Industrial Indemnity, and Wausau Insurance where he was an Assistant Vice President. He was also on the faculty of Colorado State University and Arizona State University.

So my book didnt come in on time. I went to the public library and discovered a very old copy that was still the same as the newer edition. Find as old a copy as you can and save a buck or two.

The book I bought turned out to be Petersen's 3rd edition of Safety Management Techniques. Twenty years old. No good for my safety classes. Beware-------I found out the hard way that you MUST check and see which edition you are getting from a seller. The Fourth is the one you need in this instance.

Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda is a pitch perfect book that gets tone, character, plot, and flow exquisitely perfect. It's the type of book that leaves you with a big smile that lingers long after you've finished; an easy read with distinct characters and an emphasis on the people, not the drama or being gay. As well, a lot of cliches in this genre are neatly avoided, making for a strong and distinct voice from our main character.

Story: Simon is 16, has great friends, does well at school, and has a cool family (well, ok, perhaps they try a bit too hard to be cool). He even likes his older and younger sisters. Simon's also figured out he's gay but doesn't feel any pressure to come out. When he meets someone like himself on the school's private tumbler, he thinks maybe it might be the right time to let his friends/family know. But "Blue" is a bit more shy about the prospect - including telling Simon who he is. While Simon tries to figure which of his friends might be Blue, an email is left up and he finds himself annoyingly blackmailed. He worries that his relationship with good friends might change as well as the 'big deal' his parents will make of the situation in supporting him. But all the same, what he really wants is to convince Blue that meeting in person really is the best for both of them.

Although a YA read, this is very down to earth and sweet - lacking over the top scenes, angst, evil high schoolers, sex, drugs, or rock and roll. Much of the plot is Simon dealing with an acquaintance who wants to meet Simon's popular and pretty girl pal, Abby, and who knows of Simon's emails to Blue. It's a light and implied blackmail that Simon resents even as he goes along setting the two up halfheartedly. The rest of the plot is the sweetly unfolding romance in email form between Blue and Simon - at first cautious and then more curious about each other as the plot progresses. It's the type of story that you fall in love with as you watch the characters fall in love.

There are several side stories though the book is told solely through Simon's very grounded POV. "She loves him, he loves somebody else" is a common motif, as well as the nature of friendship and how it changes as kids get older. It makes for some very poignant scenes between Simon and his friends.

What really struck me about this book is that it felt authentic. It wasn't a syrupy sweet Lifetime Channel made for TV movie nor was it a sensationalistic overwrought YA drama. It's a book that makes you feel good but never resorts to schmaltz or saccharine. Everyone feels true to high school, with a mix of selfishness, confusion, and distraction so much a part of teen life. The book is infinitely quotable as a result - author Becky Albertalli gets it all perfect.

Although yes, Simon's romantic interest is another guy, the gay subtext is not the point of the book. Blue could have been a girl and the book would have been just as compelling. But the hook ups in Simon's Atlanta town also cross racial lines - making a welcome change from white cheerleaders being the 'it' girl for every high school guy. Class, gender, race are not qualifiers or limiters on any part of the story.

The plot never sagged and I didn't want to put it down once started. Very modern, to the moment, authentic, and incredibly sweet without being false. I easily rate this a 5 star read - one of the most enjoyable I've encountered this year. Highly recommended. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

this is a book EVERYONE needs to read!

this is a book i know will stay with me forever (or at least for a long long time). if you don’t already know, this is a “gay” book. even if you feel uncomfortable or somewhat opposed to people of LGBTQ, i still believe you should read simon vs.

i’ve read other novels that are LGBTQ, but i’ve never read one that was as wholeheartedly and honest as simon vs. everything was so relatable. in other novels, it was clear and obvious the characters that were LGBTQ were sorta different: in the way they act, speak, dress, etc. etc. however in simon vs., that was most certainly not the case. after reading this novel, i’ve realized that people who are LGBTQ are just like everyone else. there really isn’t a difference between gays and straights, except the preference in gender; in the end, that’s all there is.

reading things from simon’s perspective, we could also see how the LGBTQ community is generally treated. it was beautiful to see people who were incredibly supportive, but also people who were just downright awful. i loved every bit of that. it was completely genuine and true. we saw everything: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

my favorite aspect of the novel was how casual simon and his friends spoke of being gay. they would often joke about it – but not in anyway i found insulting or condescending. people often make this a huge deal, which i suppose it is a big deal, but sometime it shouldn’t have to be a big deal. if you think about it, being gay/straight/etc is only a big deal because people make it a big deal. why should it really matter? it’s just a small part of who we/you are. i find it similar to a person’s race. for example, it’s not like you’re going to see someone and instantly judge them because of their race (if you do, then go away). the same should be said about a persons’ sexual orientation.

simon was an extremely sarcastic and funny character, so i couldn’t help but smile and grin the entire time. no, seriously, i couldn’t read this book in public because i would (literally) laugh out loud and smile to myself. people were definitely giving me strange looks, but i have no regrets because i looooooove it so much! (eventually i resorted to happily reading in my room.)

the main reason why i enjoyed this book so much was because IT WAS SO CUTE. the interactions between simon and blue made me want to squeal; i couldn’t help but root for them until the very end. the relationships between everyone were truly genuine and lovely and just.. *content sigh*. his family and friends were great and everything was

good luck.

Appears comprehensive, but I found two errors on the first person I looked up (Eli Bosworth). First a typo (1979 instead of 1779), the second a cut-and-paste error (wrong husband for his granddaughter Sarah). Makes me wonder about the rest of the book.
My biggest complaint is the lack of any kind of acronym / abbreviation list. Many are obvious, such as “b” for born. But if you are new to genealogy and don’t know what dozens of others, such as MSSR or VR stand for, good luck.

One Of My Top Enterpreneurial Books of All Time!

When I can't put a book down, that's when I know I love it; the book wins over all else -- the TV, the football game, the Facebook -- everything is put off until the book is read in its entirety.

This was one of those books.

As an author myself of an entrepreneurial/finance book (The Millionaire Fastlane) I am often asked and approached, what entrepreneur books do I recommend? Sadly, my list is few because most entrepreneur books are written by authors first, entrepreneurs second. Most entrepreneur books are simply full of "feel-good" self-important BS platitudes that do nothing but promote a false reality of entrepreneurship and what it takes to succeed in entrepreneurship.

Who Owns the Ice House puts all the critical "success" factors into perspective, and tells it from a gripping perspective that shows you, if Clifton can do it, there's no way in hell you shouldn't be to do it!

Unfortunately, as I read the book I became acutely aware that it probably wouldn't sell a lot of books simply because the content is NOT what people want to hear: The cold-hard truth behind what it takes to succeed in entrepreneurship is a firm commitment to your customer and hard work (NOT 4-hour work weeks, NOT outsourcing, NOT "do what you love", NOT "follow your passion"). Solve needs. Fix problems. Always put the customer first. Your personal motivations in the entrepreneurial transaction become irrelevant and the story of Clifton Talbert shows the positive result of that commitment. Nowadays, books like this (ones that hit the nail on the head) are passed over for the stuff that people WANT to hear (You can make millions "following your passion" and working 10 hours a week from your basement! Blah Blah) ... don't pass on this book, I'm glad I didn't.

Best Book for Entrepreneurs

Once in a long while you come across a book that actually teaches something. "Ice House" is one of those rare and timeless books. I read it in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. Entrepreneurship is much more than balance sheets, and business plans. It's about the intangibles that create success. As an experienced entrepreneur, I can recommend "Ice House" for any current business owner as well as someone wishing to start a business. This book is so good, it should be read more than once, and kept on your back table as a continuous reference manual. Kudos to Mr. Taulbert and Mr. Schoeniger for their wisdom and instincts.

Few Books are Life-Changing...

This book has become a text book for some college classes in entrepreneurship. It is also featured prominently in the materials of such heavy-weight entrepreneurship organizations as the Kaufman Foundation.
What is special about this book? It is about Uncle Cleve, an everyman in segregated Mississippi who refused to get on the truck which transported black laborers to the cotton fields. Instead, he bought an icehouse and delivered ice to both sides of the railroad tracks. And then he did much more. And Uncle Cleve became economically very successful against impossible odds. How he did it, his habits, his ways of thinking, how he related to other people and with whom he chose to associate, are all subjects of the book.

Are you well-motivated but lack opportunity? This book is for you.

Are you a young person looking for direction; maybe looking for work with no luck? This book is for you.

I wrote very short summaries of each chapter and have them saved on my phone. I read them periodically in order to maintain focus--they are life-changers.

About the Author

David C. Lay holds a B.A. from Aurora University (Illinois), and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles. Lay has been an educator and research mathematician since 1966, mostly at the University of Maryland, College Park. He has also served as a visiting professor at the University of Amsterdam, the Free University in Amsterdam, and the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany. He has over 30 research articles published in functional analysis and linear algebra.

As a founding member of the NSF-sponsored Linear Algebra Curriculum Study Group, Lay has been a leader in the current movement to modernize the linear algebra curriculum. Lay is also co-author of several mathematics texts, including Introduction to Functional Analysis, with Angus E. Taylor, Calculus and Its Applications, with L.J. Goldstein and D.I. Schneider, and Linear Algebra Gems-Assets for Undergraduate Mathematics, with D. Carlson, C.R. Johnson, and A.D. Porter.

A top-notch educator, Professor Lay has received four university awards for teaching excellence, including, in 1996, the title of Distinguished Scholar-Teacher of the University of Maryland. In 1994, he was given one of the Mathematical Association of America's Awards for Distinguished College or Unviersity Teaching of Mathematics. He has been elected by the university students to membership in Alpha Lambda Delta National Scholastic Honor Society and Golden Key National Honor Society. In 1989, Aurora University conferred on him the Outstanding Alumnus award. Lay is a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Canadian Mathematical Society, the International Linear Algebra Society, the Mathematical Association of America, Sigma Xi, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Since 1992, he has served several terms on the national board of the Association of Christians in the Mathematical Sciences.

Good book

I am just finishing up an introductory Linear Algebra course using this book. I am a mechanical engineering student, and not a math major, so keep that in mind when reading this review.

I personally really liked Lay's approach and writing style. The first chapter is a basic overview of linear algebra and helps you start to see what linear algebra is all about immediately.

I also like Lay's method of highlighting important theorems and definitions. He uses a light blue background for theorems and key ideas and a greenish type color for definitions. Very helpful for studying and you don't have to dig through the text to find the main topics. There is also a glossary, something that seems kind of rare in math textbooks and I really liked having.

I liked the practice problems before each problem set, they were kind of like examples, except the solution was on a different page. Also, row operations in this text always work out nicely, which means I didn't struggle with difficult computations that need not be difficult and cloud the concept I was trying to learn.

I didn't feel like there was enough problems. For each section there was about 10-20 problems computational problems, some true/false questions, and about 10-15 or so questions that either asked you to prove things or were applied problems. I wish there was twice the amount of problems, I'm the kind of student who needs lots of practice.

The invertible matrix theorem should of been summarized in its entirety somewhere. Its scattered across 6 sections in 5 different chapters.

I feel the book is really good for engineering students and applied math majors. Pure theoretical math majors, I could see how you might not like this book. The text doesn't seem that abstract and you aren't buried in proofs, but I believe Lay has geared his text more towards applied mathematics than pure math anyways. I was able to learn most of the material on my own as my professor (as in most math and science classes) was really bad.

In summary, I feel that this book is good for self-study or as a saving grace from a poor professor.

The clearest of the bunch

I'm familiar with three linear algebra textbooks: Gilbert Strang's Linear Algebra and Its Applications, Georgi E. Shilov's Linear Algebra, and now this one. It was recommended to me by one of my brothers, who had the author as a professor at the University of Maryland - College Park.

Gil Strang's book is very well regarded, and I like it, too. However, as a writer, Strang tries a little too hard to be friendly and colloquial. As a result, some of his explanations are less clear than they need to be. It helps that videos of his linear algebra lectures are on the Web at [...], and those lectures clarify some of the "folksy" wording in the textbook. Strang obviously loves his subject and knows it thoroughly, but those qualities, however admirable, do not substitute for clear writing.

Georgi E. Shilov's book is also highly regarded, by me as well. Shilov is one of those no-nonsense Russian mathematicians who's all about the subject and doesn't care if you like him or not. As a result, his writing is very clear and straightforward, albeit a little stiff and formal even in translation. The great virtues of Shilov's book are that the writing is clear and it's very rigorous: in fact, a reader would do well to have some familiarity with abstract algebra before starting it. But the book's virtues are also its weakness: because of the rigorous treatment, Shilov offers considerably less conceptual hand-holding than Strang. Yes, you can understand what he's talking about, but you'd sure better have a strong mathematical background, time, and self-confidence to plow through his book, especially if it's on your own.

Which brings us, finally, to the Lay book. I am delighted to report that Lay combines the informal, encouraging tone and conceptual hand-holding of the Strang book with the clarity of the Shilov book. In other words, they're all good, but for most undergraduates, Lay is the best of the three. There's also an excellent study guide (Linear Algebra and Its Applications: Study Guide (update))for the Lay book.

Simply the best

I have heard students complain about how unhelpful this book is and professors complain that it is too easy.
I strongly disagree with both.

I am very well acquainted with the following introductory texts: Strang, O'Nan, Leon, Larson and Lay. As a student, I learned initially from the O'Nan text, then transferred colleges and had to repeat the class with the Strang text. As a professor, I have taught out of the 3 remaining texts. I have also examined the text written by Kolman.

Lay's Ch. 1 is an extraordinary result: he creates an overview that unites all the main ideas that comprise linear algebra.
No other text I know of comes near the breadth or clarity he achieves in this opening chapter. This chapter alone makes the book worth owning.

I also want to answer those who attack the Student Study Guide. It one of the few I have seen that is actually written by the author. It is likewise excellent and provides answers and hints for all the most critical problems in the text. I highly recommend it as well. I require it when I teach using the Lay text.

I have convincingly achieved my best classroom outcomes using the Lay text. I have actually covered most of the first 6 chapters and the first 2 sections of Ch. 7 at the junior college level in one semester with a decent group of students who were often slowed down by a group of underachievers in the class.

In summary, students who do not like this book will be hard pressed to find anything better- just pick up one of the competing texts used in colleges today and try to read it. Lay is by far the most 'user-friendly' text, he is clearly attempting to engage his readers. Unfortunately, most students at this level do not have enough experience at this point to make an informed judgement about the quality of a mathematics text or the quality of a mathematics teacher.

Professors who do not appreciate this text are an even more puzzling group. I can only surmise that the teachers in this group do not understand the ideas or the focus of an introductory class in linear algebra very well and are simply teaching without thinking.
