Great for both reading comprehension and social studies for a wide grade range

This book is a great, exciting history book that students won't even know they are reading history. Yet is is functional and provides some great detail of Martin Luther King that even adults may not know. The book can be used for history/social studies or language arts, or reading or any combination thereof. It is most appropriate for middle school years but could also be used for advanced elementary readers or struggling secondary readers. A great book for black history month, MLK holiday, or other specialized subject (civil rights, nonviolent protests, eloquent leaders, etc.).

Dear Reviewer,
How many times do you change the fate of a race? Well, when I read 10 days Martin Luther King Junior. I felt like I was right next to the action watching history be made. I think this was a great book it could be used as a reference for a project or a fun choice book. I believe anyone 6th grade to college would like this book. College and high school students may like it for reference. It gives specific dates like the birth and death date of MLKJ.I think 6th through 8th grade would like this book because it is a fun book read. I believe kids younger than 6th grade would have a hard time understanding the book. I thought this book was OK. It was boring sometimes because of all of the facts, but it was a very well written book. I like the authors point of view I felt he was always supporting Martin's decisions. He had very positive writing on the march on Washington. I also liked how in the very first chapter the author made the bus driver look like a very big, mean, and scary man. The author also made little Martin look like a brave hero, which he was in his later life. I think the moral of this story is to not judge someone by the color of their skin, but more so, that anyone can make a difference.

Meaningful History

This is both absorbing and informative. As a history buff I encountered information I hadn't known before, and deeply appreciated the very fair translation of a time in history that was significant and complex. I also appreciated the straight forward writing style on behalf of my remedial English students. This entire series is a wonderful gift to students!

Sean M. Blitzstein, M.D. is the Director, Psychiatry Clerkship and Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Ivan Oransky, M.D. is managing editor, online, at Scientific American. All you need to pass the shelf

A 25 year old medical student comes into your clinic complaining of anxiety for the past week. He tells you he has an upcoming shelf exam in psychiatry and "I haven't studied." Further history reveals that his clinical rotation did not expose him to all aspects of psychiatry, and there are major gaps in his knowledge base. His medical history is unremarkable other than a healing bruise on his right temple from wrestling a PCP-intoxicated schizophrenic to the ground. He reports some difficulty falling asleep but notes that "reading case files helps." When asked how his rotation has gone so far, the student says "fine, but I think one of the attendings has it out for me." When asked if he had any reason to believe the attending was conspiring against him, the student responds "dude, it's an expression. I meant he doesn't like me." Student denies anhedonia, depressed mood, or audio or visual hallucinations. Utox is negative.

What treatment approach will be most effective in this patient?

A. psychodynamic psychotherapy to find the source of his anxiety
B. cognitive-behavioral therapy to overcome his fear of PCP-intoxicated schizophrenics
C. risperidone for his persecutory delusion
D. full leather restraints to assist study discipline
E. Lange Q & A Psychiatry

E. Psychodynamic psychotherapy generally requires the patient to meet with a therapist for 4 or more sessions per week. Also, the patient has given you an identifiable stressor, his upcoming shelf exam. There are no indications that the encounter with the schizophrenic is the cause for his anxiety, so CBT would not be indicated. The patient clarified that he does not hold a persecutory delusion toward his attending but merely responded in a form of casual lay speak. Leather restraints may prove helpful in avoiding study distractions, but the patient would require a 1:1 sitter to turn the pages. Lange Q & A psychiatry is the only response that offers a time-sensitive and targeted approach to address the patient's underlying concern. The book will keep him engaged, expose him to all aspects of psychiatry, and prepare him for the format of the shelf exam. While this treatment can be augmented with another resource, it is not required for therapeutic benefit.

Great review book! Very helpful on psychiatry clerkship preparing for the shelf exam. Case scenarios are similar to shelf exam style. Explanations to questions are thorough and well written. The broad range of topics is very complete, from adult to pediatric psychiatry, to pharm management and legal and ethical issues and the two complete practice exams are very useful.

Question book for Psychiatry

Lange Q&A Psychiatry, 10th EditionSo far I have completed the first 2 Chap and believe that this is a great resource. The questions are interesting, well written, and incorporate concepts from other fields of medicine to make the clinical scenarios realistic. I recommend Lange Q&A for learning about Psychiatry,and preparing for the NBME shelf exam. Other students that took the shelf before me recommended this book in addition to World and rather than "other" popular Psych question books.

Addendum:
After completing the NBME Psych Shelf exam I believe this book was instrumental in doing well (contrary to popular belief Psych Shelf is not easy).

Like one of Aimes's other adult-themed braces books, "Love and Braces," this story goes heavy on the embarrassment of wearing braces as an adult, and how men supposedly look at an adult woman with braces as some sort of horribly (if temporarily) disfigured object of pity. The plus side of this attitude is that it allows Aimes to have the characters talk about braces and orthodontic treatment pretty extensively, rather than just narrating their thoughts. This is enjoyable - I suspect that those who are "into" adult braces are mostly starved for conversations about them - since it allows the reader to imagine himself inserted into that conversation.

"Bracing Times with Cecilia" moves quickly from a purely braces-driven story into some light sadomasochism and bondage. I thought this was nicely done, though it is pretty tame compared to some things I've seen and read on the internet. The insight into Cecilia's attraction to bondage is interesting, if a bit farfetched (hey, it's fantasy). The story eventually winds its way back to being braces-driven, as Cecilia makes some extraordinary demands on her boyfriend.

While Cecilia's braces are central to the story itself, the book doesn't focus on braces as sexualized objects. In that regard, it may somewhat disappoint people who fetishize orthodontic braces, of whom there are a surprising number. The most graphic the author gets regarding braces in a sexual fashion is Roger (Cecilia's boyfriend) mentioning he can feel sharp edges when he kisses Cecilia, and an almost offhand mention of Cecilia wearing elastic bands on her braces during oral sex. In essence, this is a sex-oriented book where the braces are part of the main character, but not at all central to the sex she has in the story.

The story's detour into Cecilia's strong interest in working in orthodontics as a career was the best part of the book to me. The author manages to touch on several things about braces through Cecilia's passion for orthodontia that really made me recognize myself in the story. It's as if Aimes was channeling some of my thoughts as she wrote, and I could look at a few passages and think, "Yes! That's exactly how I feel about it!" It's an odd feeling to recognize one's own thoughts so clearly in a work of fiction, but also very pleasant.

Lastly, much like "Love and Braces," the self-published author could use a good copy editor. There are a number of typos in the book - actually a surprising number, given its brevity - and there are a few places where the sentence structure makes things a little confusing. It's certainly not a huge distraction, but it's occasionally a bit annoying.

Overall, I enjoyed this short book a good deal. Enough, in fact, that I read it twice. I've also given it to my wife to read, not because she necessarily shares my interest, but so she can understand me a little better.

Belem and in awe

In this book, Gary shares an incredible experience he had in Belem, Brazil in 2002 while preaching in a large stadium for thousands of people. Funny thing is that I am from belem and I was there on that time to testify all this. I was only a boy at that time, around the age of 17 and I was there serving as one of the translators. Funny thing that I bought this book and I got shocked when I read this part where he shares his experiences there. I'm amazed! I remember seeing him preaching with my friends. He was really rocking out and preaching with such power and authority! I believe more than one thousand people got saved on that day. I feel so blessed by knowing that I was there seeing all that. I didn't know it meant a lot to him. Today Im 32 years old and i live in Oregon, married and I have two kids. It's a delightful surprise when.. I get the book.. I read it.. And he's talking about my hometown and I was there when all that happened!! I was there! I felt like I traveled back in time and I was just living every single second of that special crusade all over again... I read this entire book in 1 hour. Loved it.. Not 5 stars but 10 thousand!

Ordered online for school. The copy I received is misprinted. Missing pages and entire chapters. Really useless to me when I am trying to do homework for a chapter that I don't have.
