Great resource, endless applications

This book is a must-have for anyone who considers themselves beyond an entry-level carpenter. A lot of the ideas, tips, and theories in the book build upon common practices, and most of the projects are a little more advanced than hanging a shelf. The book covers everything from planning the site for a new construction, to framing the walls and roof, installing siding and shingles, etc. But even as a first-timer, there is plenty of knowledge in this book for you.
My usage for this book has mostly been for cutting rafters, both on a jobsite and for a shed I just built. This book gives you detailed instructions for measuring and cutting rafters without getting into the painful details of a beginner's guide to carpentry. I was able to calculate everything quickly and precisely, and there was even a guide on how to build a time-saving template to lay out your rafters identically.
This is the 2nd time I have bought this book- I loaned my first copy to a coworker who didn't want to give it back! I told him Merry Christmas and bought another copy for myself. John Carroll definitely knows what he is talking about, and I appreciate his writing style.
For the record, I am a licensed residential contractor with 10 years of experience, and I still found this book helpful. This was not written so advanced that the beginner won't understand- I think it is very clear and concise, and will give people a better understanding of the more technical side of the job.

Solid from the ground up.

I wish I'd had this book a long time ago. Granted, a lot of the knowledge and practice in here is stuff you will pick up on the job-site, but probably some time after you could've used it. After a brief introduction, the author follows the construction process from foundation to roof, providing a wealth of mistake saving and even mistake correcting information. Confidence is essential to planning, executing and efficiently completing any project and this book delivers just that. It should be considered absolutely essential for those seeking to become proficient builders, whether professional or not. If I believed in employees, I'd make sure they all had a copy and I'd pay them to read it. The basics of tool selection and use, practical accuracy, and formulas are included with a lot of tips, tricks and explanations. I intend to make this book mandatory reading for my sons, it will save me a lot of time teaching, and save them a few years of correcting blunders.

A benchmark for the way "how to" books should be written. Clear and well illustrated. Probably should be considered a foundation (no pun intended) book for your home improvement library. Measuring, marking, and laying out correctly save you time, material which equals money and less frustration.

Great resource with broad coverage of the subject

Pity that they don't have this in electronic format... Very very informative, covers the concepts and attitudes humanity has held regarding time and measuring it from the dawn of civilization until roughly the modern renaissance. Covers not only the mechanical devices used, but also various calendars, holidays, and other interesting trivia and tidbits that paint a very broad and satisfying overall picture of the subject. If you're doing research on calendars, clocks or timekeeping for scholastic or personal reasons, I recommend this highly. The best I've found on the subject in years, considering how concise it is.

Great survey of the way Time is thought of in the West

This is a fascinating history of time and the way we measure it in the West. Whitrow covers just about every topic one would expect connected to our concepts of time beginning with the evidence of Prehistory and extending to contemporary physics and philosophy.
My favorite parts are those dealing with the creation of the calendar and the ways that were developed for dividing up the day in the Hellenistic world. I had always taken the names of the months and the length of days in each pretty much for granted, but Whitrow goes into detail about how the egos of the Roman Emperors forced a renumbering of the months so that Augustus could have his month on the calendar have as many days as any other. I had never realized that July was named for Julius and August for Augustus. Whitrow also covers the development and refinement of the calendar over the centuries, and why their was the need for the Gregorian calendar to replace the Julian, and the former's gradual acceptance by all the world.
There is also discussion of the problems of clocks, of the various types, and their development. And special kinds of clocks are covered as well, such as John Harrison's that was recounted in greater detail in Sobel's LONGITUDE.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in how the Western world has developed its ways of thinking about time and how to measure it. Since these concepts undergird virtually everything that happens in our culture, it deals with exceedingly fundamental concepts indeed.

An excellent overview on the history of time.

I had always been curious as to the origin of our calendar, our timing system etc. This book presents a very good introduction to this, and also to the changes in the perception and importance of time to different societies throughout history. It is a good introduction though, and not a book for academic research.

About the Author
Dr. Ralph Stair received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University, an M.B.A. from Tulane University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon. He has taught at the University of Oregon, the University of Washington, the University of New Orleans, and Florida State University. He has taught several courses through Florida State University's Study Abroad Program in London. Throughout the years, Dr. Stair has focused his teaching and research on information systems. He has endowed the Ralph Stair Prize in Innovative Education at Florida State University. He also provided funding for the Stair-Harkrider scholarship and the Ralph Stair Prize in Academic Improvement at his high school in Wisconsin.

Professor George Reynolds brings a wealth of business, teaching, and writing experience to this book. exactly the high level overview I was looking for. I also really like the format with key words on the left margin. The structure and format is great and makes it easy to skim through. Each chapter has ~100+ references to academic articles and there are countless real world examples both as narratives and as problems for solving

Cannot be read on Windows PC or Tablets!

Don't waste you money if you planned on using this for a class. You cannot read this on computers because it gives an error stating that the book cannot be read using the Kindle app for Window. I am now forced to try to do assignments from this title via by Kindle Fire. The Kindle fire is great for browsing you favorite novel, but horrible to try to do homework and study.

Excellent overview of the fundamentals

This was a well-organized textbook that incorporated contemporary topics and issues and illustrated the material with examples from public and private institutions. Review materials at the end of each chapter were highly supportive. However,I found reading the textbook extremely fatiguing on my eyes and cumbersome. The glossy paper reflected light rather than it illuminating the page. Page layouts were attractive and the small font packed a great deal of material but the combination of small, tight lettering and off-black ink contrasted less well against the white page. The color inserts were particularly difficult to read.

Fascinated from the beginning!

I've heard experts say that running is 90% mental toughness, it's fascinating to finally learn the science behind it. Jeff Brown had me hooked from the beginning with his chapter on "I Think Therefor I Am a Runner" and the discussion of the reticular activating system. I also loved the brain strategies section which provides readers with science-based cognitive tools to use while your grinding out a long run or marathon. I think I'll recall and use principles I learned in this book at all my future races. Cheers!

Not Bad but a little Basic.

This is a good book esp. if you are just starting to get into a fitness program or running. For the more advanced athlete I would say the book is a bit basic. I am still glad I read it though as any and all tips are welcome when it comes to training ones brain to "embrace the suck"!!!

A "MUST READ" for any runner!!!!

I think this book is a MUST for any kind of runner, recreational or elite. I agree with Dr. Brown, he said "Your biggest asset (or sometimes your greatest enemy) is your brain." If you don't understand this, you would not improve as a runner.
I met Dr. Brown during the expo of the NY Marathon this year, a humble human being and a great person!.
The book is easy to understand and read. 100% recommended!!!

In 1971, Fran�ois Bizot was researching Khmer pottery and Buddhist ritual in rural Cambodia when, along with two Cambodian assistants, he was arrested by Communist guerrillas on suspicion of being an American spy. In captivity, Bizot would establish an unlikely rapport with his interrogator, Comrade Duch, a twenty-nine-year-old former math teacher, now commander of the jungle encampment. After many long conversations, Duch would become convinced of Bizot’s innocence, finally deciding to release his prisoner against the wishes of his superiors, including one Saloth Sar—the future Pol Pot. And so it was on Christmas Day 1971 that Bizot was allowed to depart the camp but obliged to leave his assistants behind.

In 1999, Bizot would hear of the arrest of the “butcher of Tuol Sleng.” This was the nom de guerre that Comrade Duch had earned after releasing Bizot and proceeding to exterminate some ten thousand Cambodians, including Bizot’s assistants, Lay and Son. Duch’s unexpected capture after years in hiding presented Fran�ois Bizot with his first opportunity to confront the man who’d held him captive for three months and whose strange sense of justice had resulted in Bizot’s being the only Westerner to survive imprisonment by the Khmer Rouge. The arrest also forced Bizot to confront a paradox: How could the man who’d been his savior have become one of the most monstrous perpetrators of the Cambodian genocide?�

Taking part in the trial as a witness, with Duch the sole defendant, would return Bizot to the heart of darkness. This is the testimony of what he discovered—about the torturer and about himself—on that harrowing journey.

A scholar of Cambodian culture, Bizot recounted his escape from the victorious Khmer Rouge in his memoir, The Gate (2003). That was not, however, his first encounter with those revolutionaries. In 1971, they seized Bizot and two Cambodian companions, eventually releasing him and killing his friends. This account of that ordeal hinges on Bizot’s later recognition that his interrogator subsequently became the commander of the Khmer Rouge regime’s main prison, a sinister, murderous place memorialized in Voices from S-21, by David Chandler (2000). Recalling the man, who was named Duch and was recently convicted of his crimes, Bizot ostensibly recoils from Duch’s barbarity, but his true purpose is plumbing Duch for signs of humanity and himself for signs of his personal inhumanity. For that, Bizot alludes to a cruelty he says he committed (killing a family dog), which introduces to the narrative a self-flagellating, if not misanthropic tone. Along with Bizot’s labyrinthine disquisition into Duch’s mentality, this memoir gives disturbing witness, including trial testimony, to a perpetrator of the Cambodian genocide. --Gilbert Taylor

About the Author

This book is a difficult read, possibly because it is in translation; probably because more is left out than described in detail. Three observations:

1. Best not to be a prisoner of a fundamentalist sect.
2. It's fairly obvious why le Carre was impressed. It's almost Smiley and Karla in the flesh.
3. Is the Stockholm Syndrome a valid concept?
